  1. Evil Deliver Us From

  2. Evil Deliverance From

  3. If God were all powerful, He could destroy evil • If God were all good, He would want to destroy evil • But evil is not destroyed • Therefore, an all-powerful and all-good God does not exist • - J. S. Mill

  4. “Deliver” in the Old Testament הַצִּיל - hassil: to be saved; to pull out; to rob; to remove “So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land” (Exodus 3:8) נתן - naton: to give; to present someone with something; to surrender someone or something “So Israel made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.” ” (Numbers 21:2) Deliver ישׁע - yosiu: to receive help; to save; come to assist “Then the Lord raised up judges who delivered them from the hands of those who plundered them. ” (Judges 2:16)

  5. “Deliver” in the New Testament παραδοθήσεται – paradothesetai: hand over; give over; entrust “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn Him to death ” (Matthew 20:18) Deliver ῥύομαι – rhysai: to rescue from danger, preserve someone from someone or something “who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, ” (2 Corinthians 1:10)

  6. “God is to us a God of deliverances; And to God the Lord belong escapes from death.” (Psalm 68:20)

  7. Delivered from Satan to God Delivered from error to truth Delivered from darkness to light Delivered from sin to righteousness Delivered from the fallen world to God’s kingdom Delivered from fear to security Delivered from eternal death to eternal life

  8. “And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew dialect, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ “And I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And the Lord said, ‘I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. ‘But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; rescuing you from the Jewish people and from the Gentiles, to whom I am sending you, to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’ ” (Acts 26:14–18)

  9. Delivered from Satan to God “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” - Matthew 6:13

  10. Delivered from Satan to God “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. ” (Ephesians 2:1–2) “The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged, with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will. ” (2 Timothy 2:24–26) “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives” (Hebrews 2:14-15)

  11. Delivered from Error to Truth “We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. ” (1 John 4:6)

  12. “There is another reaction that the evil frequently engender in us: confusion. Describing an encounter with an evil person, one woman wrote, it was ‘as if I’d suddenly lost my ability to think.’ Once again, this reaction is quite appropriate. Lies confuse. The evil are ‘the people of the lie,’ deceiving others as they also build layer upon layer of self-deception.” - M. Scott Peck People of the Lie

  13. Delivered from Error to Truth “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. ” (John 14:16–17) “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. ” (John 16:13) “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth. ” (2 Timothy 3:7) “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. ” (3 John 4)

  14. “I am always asked this question...what do you think is the main problem facing the church? I always answer basically the same way. The main issue facing the church is the lack of discernment. That is the main issue facing the church. The church doesn't distinguish between truth and falsehood. It has a defective immune system. It has a case of spiritual AIDS. It does not have the ability to fight error because it doesn't know the truth. It doesn't have enough truth antibodies to fight off error. The church is ignorant. It is blissfully ignorant and consequently it is victimized easily by error.” - John MacArthur

  15. Delivered from Darkness to Light “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son” (Colossians 1:13)

  16. Delivered from Darkness to Light “The people who walk in darkness Will see a great light; Those who live in a dark land, The light will shine on them. ” (Isaiah 9:2) “This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. ” (John 3:19) “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” (John 8:12) “The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. ” (Romans 13:12) “for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light ” (Ephesians 5:8)

  17. Delivered from Sin to Righteousness “But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. ” (Romans 6:17–18)

  18. “Jesus reaches out and touches the leaper. Somehow, instead of the infection being passed to him, his wholeness, his ‘cleanness,’ is transmitted to the leper instead. Jesus allows himself to be touched by the woman with the issue of blood, whose every touch would render someone else unclean; but power flows instead from him to her, and she is healed, He touches the corpse of the window’s son at Nain, and instead of Jesus contracting uncleanness, the corpse comes back to life.” - N. T. Wright

  19. Delivered from Sin to Righteousness “Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. ” (Romans 6:11) “But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. ” (Romans 6:22) “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. ” (Romans 8:2) “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. ” (Galatians 5:13)

  20. Delivered from Fallen World to God’s Kingdom “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:1–2)

  21. Delivered from Fallen World to God’s Kingdom "For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is the one who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?” (1 John 5:4) "But may it never be that I would boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14) "For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.“ (2 Peter 1:4)

  22. Delivered from Fear to Security “I sought the Lord, and He answered me, And delivered me from all my fears. ” (Psalm 34:4)

  23. Delivered from Fear to Security “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. ” (1 John 4:18) “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. ” (2 Timothy 1:7) “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. ” (Romans 8:1)

  24. Delivered from Eternal Death to Life “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. ” (John 3:36)

  25. “It [the resurrection] was like the call of Abraham coming after the judgment on Babel; like the dove and the olive leaf after the forty days’ rain. It was God’s act of new creation after judgment had fallen on the evil of the old.” - N. T. Wright

  26. Word Study - Salvation Greek Meaning soteria ① deliverance, preservation ② salvation Arndt, W., Danker, F. W., & Bauer, W. (2000). A Greek-English lexicon of the New Testament and other early Christian literature. “And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.” (Luke 19:9) Interpretation & Application The word ‘soteria’ in the Greek can mean both deliverance and preservation or salvation, but both have in mind God rescuing an individual from the situation they find themselves in. In essence, Zaccheus had been delivered by Christ / God that day, with their being immediate evidence of his about face via fruit that he swore to bring forth.

  27. Delivered from Eternal Death to Life We talk about salvation and being ‘saved’, but rarely is the question asked “Saved from what?”

  28. Delivered from Eternal Death to Life “And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:46) “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. ” (John 5:24) “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ” (Romans 6:23)

  29. All Deliverances Bound to Christ “I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. ” (2 Timothy 1:12)

  30. Delivered from Satan to God “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. ” (1 John 3:8)

  31. Delivered from Error to Truth “I am the truth” (John 14:6)

  32. Delivered from Darkness to Light “Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”” (John 8:12)

  33. Delivered from Sin to Righteousness “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. ” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

  34. Delivered from Fallen World to God’s Kingdom “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

  35. Delivered from Fear to Security “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. ” (John 10:27–28)

  36. Delivered from Eternal Death to Life “I am the life ” (John 14:6)

  37. A True Christian is one who has been Delivered Delivered from Satan to God Delivered from error to truth Delivered from darkness to light Delivered from sin to righteousness Delivered from the fallen world to God’s kingdom Delivered from fear to security Delivered from eternal death to eternal life

  38. “Since I am afflicted and needy, Let the Lord be mindful of me. You are my help and my deliverer; Do not delay, O my God.” (Psalm 40:17)

  39. If God is all-good, He will destroy evil • If God is all powerful, He can destroy evil • But evil is not destroyed • Therefore, God can and will one day destroy evil

  40. “It [the Bible] is written to tell the story of what God has done, is doing and will do about evil.” - N. T. Wright Evil and the Justice of God

  41. “And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.” And He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” And He said, “Write, for these words are faithful and true.” ” (Revelation 21:3–5)
