  1. CETIS an introduction and overview Lisa Corley CETIS Pedagogy Forum Co-ordinator Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  2. What are educational technology standards and specifications? Standards and specifications that are designed to facilitate the description, packaging, sequencing and delivery of educational content, learning activities and learner information – ‘e-learning’ Why? To facilitate ‘interoperability’ Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  3. Who is developing educational technology interoperability standards & specifications? • IMS Global Learning Consortium. • Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL). • European Centre for Standards/Information Society Standardisation System Learning Technologies Workshop (CEN/ISSS WS-LT). • Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. • Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Learning Technology Standards Committee (LTSC). • International Standards Organisation (ISO) Sub Committee 36 (SC 36). Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  4. What do educational technology interoperability standards & specs do? (1) • Enable users to search for, locate and retrieve appropriate content – DCMI, IMS & IEEE Metadata, IMS Digital Repositories. • Plan educational scenarios and formulate instructional design – EML & IMS Learning Design. • Deliver educational content tailored to learners’ requirements – EML, IMS Learning Design, IMS Simple Sequencing, ADL SCORM. Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  5. What do educational technology interoperability standards & specs do? (2) • Share content between systems – IMS Content Packaging, ADL SCORM. • Create and deliver computer aided assessments – IMS Question and Test Interoperability. • Record and share learner information – IMS Learner Information Packages (LIP), IMS Competencies, IMS Enterprise. • Ensure educational content is accessible to all users – IMS Accessibility, W3C WAI. Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  8. CETIS: Supporting the UK FE/HE community • Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards. • Funded by the JISC since 1997. • Supports UK higher and further education. • Supports JISC programmes and initiatives. • Represents UK HE/FE on international educational standards initiatives, e.g. IMS, CEN/ISSS. • Advises universities and colleges on the strategic, technical and pedagogic implications of educational technology standards. • Manages 8 Special Interest Groups (SIGs). Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  9. The CETIS Groups • Accessibility SIG • Assessment SIG • Educational Content SIG • Learner Information Packaging (LIP) SIG • Enterprise SIG • Metadata and Repositories SIG • FE Focus Group • Pedagogy Forum Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  10. CETIS coordination with other groups • New UK members of IMS • UfI • SUfI • BECTa • eUniversity • UK ADL Partner Lab • Metadata for Education Group (MEG) • Vendors • Others Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  11. The CETIS Groups • Established to support the UK FE/HE sector’s uptake and implementation of interoperability standards and specifications. • Track the development of educational technology interoperability standards and specifications. • Advise the sector on the relevance of different standards and specifications. • Channel the sector’s requirements back to CETIS and international standards initiatives. • Networking, discussion, and full involvement of the SIG in deciding on future tasks, feeding back to CETIS, etc. • Support development of communities of practice. Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  12. Why do we need a Pedagogy Forum? • e-learning specifications are moving up from the infrastructural level and beginning to directly impact on pedagogical issues. • important that the e-learning standards meet educational needs as well as fulfilling technical requirements • we need to generate a meaningful dialogue with those whose focus is on pedagogy. Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  13. Why do we need a Pedagogy Forum? As IMS notes: "The development of a framework that supports pedagogical diversity and innovation, while promoting the exchange and interoperability of e-learning materials, is one of the key challenges in the e-learning industry today". http://www.imsglobal.org/learningdesign/ldv1p0pd/imsld_bestv1p0pd.html Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  14. Key Questions… The Forum will discuss issues such as: • With the increasing use of learning technology, how will this affect teaching and learning practice? • What role do standards play in the development (and use) of learning technologies? • What are the limitations and opportunities which arise when standards are applied? • As the technologies evolve, how can these support various educational models, and vice versa? Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  15. Pedagogy Forum details • Membership to all CETIS groups is unstructured and free to UK HE/FE staff. • Meet approx. every 3/4 months. • Provide information via web site. • Manage discussion lists. • Undertake tasks. • Work together where appropriate, and work with other related SIGs, e.g. Assessment, FE Focus Group, etc. Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  16. Further information The CETIS website: • http://www.cetis.ac.uk • Hosts websites for all the SIGs, FE Focus and Pedagogy Forum. • Regular updates of latest developments in the field of educational technology standards & specs. • Links, definitions of terms, calendar, contacts, etc. • Described by The Technology Source as: “Probably the most comprehensive and current site devoted to educational technology interoperability standards, the CETIS Web site is an essential resource for anyone working in the fields of learning objects or learning content management systems.” Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  17. How to get involved in the Pedagogy Forum • Pedagogy Forum Launch: 14 April 2003, Manchester Free for anyone to come, but limited places. Key speakers and discussion • Check out the web site: http://www.cetis.ac.uk/pedagogy • Contact the Coordinator, Lisa Corley: l.corley@bolton.ac.uk 01204 903851 • Join the discussion / mailing list: http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/lists/CETIS-PEDAGODY.html Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards

  18. Questions? • What are the key issues for the Pedagogy Forum? Centre for Educational Technology Interoperability Standards
