A symbol is literary device that contains several layers of meaning, often concealed at first sight, and is representative of several other aspects, concepts or traits than those that are visible in the literal translation alone. Symbol is using an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning. As Jane looked up into the clear-blue, cloudless sky, she thought to herself, “There is really no limit to where my skills can take me.” What does the sky symbolize? Explain the connection.

Symbols are SO powerful in the culture and societies that some will literally fight and die for them. They can inspire and can remind us of important events. In your notebooks, reflect on common symbols that we have in our society/culture. These can be a physical symbol that represents a concept/idea OR it can be a phrase/saying that is Used to symbolize a seemingly unrelated concept/idea.

  3. On a separate sheet of paper, identify as many symbols as you can from the novel, The Good Earth. Use textual examples; providing chapter and line. Explain the symbolism and its significance.
