  1. OTHELLOAct V Scene i Rachel Au-yeung Lauren Kim Rocco Cheuk Megan Adlawan Tarlan Kehtari

  2. Scene Summary • Iago’splan is foiled • Bianca– scapegoat • Roderigo dies • Emilia and Bianca get into an argument

  3. Plot significance • Cassio remaining alive allowed him to claim that Roderigo was the attacker which left Iago’s hands clean. • Othello mistook Cassio’s cry for help as the sound of his death– which led to the commencement of his part of the plan (killing Desdemona).

  4. Theme significance • Make the best out of the worst situations. • A book should not be judged by its cover. • Naivety will lead to negative consequences. • Keep your friends close and your enemies closer (deception).

  5. Character significance IAGO RODERIGO Obedient servant, providing resource for Iago Sacrifices his life in hopes of acquiring Desdemona’s love Was killed to signal Othello conquest to kill Desdemona Easily manipulated • Does not show any mercy • Dedicated and determined • Finds reasons to stimulate his motives

  6. Character significance (CONT.) BIANCA: CASSIO: Aware of his immediate surroundings; in self defense he attacks Roderigo Unaware of Iago’s plans (still trust Iago as a friend) Static character • Scapegoat • Lower class, static character • Defends morals in hopes of finding the truth behind Cassio’s wounds

  7. SETTING SIGNIFICANCE • During the Elizabethan times women were looked down upon as lower social class; they could be blamed for any matter. • The time (night) allowed Iago to be hidden for him to execute Roderigo. • The height of the building and the hour prevented Gratiano and Lodovico from witnessing the attack.

  8. MOOD SIGNIFICANCE • A dark mood is set throughout the scene by Iago’s plot; he murders Roderigo, he injures Cassio and starts a fight between Bianca and Emilia. • Iago and Roderigo plot the murder of Cassio • Iago’saside states his plans of Roderigo’s death • An aggravated mood is set when insinuations are made; Iago puts the blame on Bianca and Roderigo. • A bewildered mood is created in Bianca’s perspective leading her to suspect more of Iago’s hidden motives.

  9. Inconsistencies • Othello mistook Roderigo’s cries of pain as Cassio’s. • Othello’s quotation: • “Strumpet, I come. / Forth of my heart those charms, thine eyes, are blotted. / Thy bed, lust-stained, shall with lust’s blood be spotted”. • It’s contradicting because this is when he prepares to kill her but the meaning of having blood spots on bed sheets symbolizes the consummation of marriage.

  10. Strengths and Weaknesses STRENGHTHS WEAKNESSES • Showcases of Iago’s strength as an improviser • Strong concentration on the theme of deception and morals • The coherence of actions • Shakespeare emphasizes Iago’s fate of his plans • The dialogue has no logic in comparison to the coherence of actions

  11. Significance of act V SCENE I • Prepares for the fate of Desdemona, Othello, Cassio, Emilia, Roderigo and Iago (commences the start of murders). • Characters start to develop suspicion of Iago’sactions.

  12. Dramatic techniques and symbolism • Dramatic Techniques: • Pathos; the audience develops pity for Roderigo • Verbal and Dramatic Irony: Iago calls out “ O murderous slave! O villain!” • Motif: • “Strumpet, strumpet” • “Villain, O Treacherous Villain” • Symbolism: • Symbolism of blood spots on bed sheets indicate the consummation of their marriage. But Othello used this symbolism to signify the death of Desdemona. Shakespeare wanted to show Othello’s verification of her betrayal in their marriage.

  13. Rhetorical devices • Repetition • “Strumpet, strumpet..” (to blame Bianca of her potential ‘evil’ plots) • “Villain, Villain” (to misdirect the suspicion of Iago’splans) • Metaphor • “This is the fruits of whoring” • Rhyme • “Forth of my heart those charms, thine eyes, are blotted;/Thy bed,lust-stain’d, shall with lust’s blood be spotted.”

  14. Questions • Why would people stereotype prostitutes as unethical individuals? • Why do you think Iago craves the satisfaction of dominating others? • What do you think the education system was in the military and how do you think it affected the current mindset of the soldiers? • Why did they advocate honor killing?
