  1. CommVault Data Management & Exchange Dogfood Presentation by: Georgia Huggins Exchange Server Support | MS IT

  2. Presenter Background • Joined Microsoft in 2000 • Administered Exchange Dogfood forest for 5 + years • Primary owner of data management & disaster recovery in the forest from Exchange 5.5 to the latest releases

  3. What is Exchange Dogfood? • Separate Exchange Forest hosted by MSIT • 20+ Exchange servers, 4+ TB of data • Various server deployments (large/small) • Various mailbox sizes (500 MB – 2+ GB) • Attempt to simulate complex customer environments (stand-alone, clustered, FE, internet bridgeheads) • 8,500 MS employees • Exchange Organization • Office Organization • Various other groups for Dogfooding purposes

  4. Dogfood’s Mission • Deploy the latest and greatest builds of Exchange, Windows and Office in a production environment • First real-user environment where new builds of Exchange are deployed • Find and fix product bugs prior to rolling out to MSIT corp. forest and shipping to customers

  5. How Do New Releasesof Exchange Get to Dogfood? • Prior to rolling out to the actual Dogfood forest: • Exchange Dev • Exchange Component testing • Exchange Build/BVT labs • Exchange Dogfood Simulation Lab (100% test)

  6. Dogfood Simulation Lab (DFSIM) • Exact data replica of production Dogfood forest (AD and Exchange) on a private network • Test and verify Exchange version updates in production Dogfood forest will work

  7. Dogfood Data Managment requirements(deploying CommVault (2000) - phase 1) • Needed a 3rd party partner with the flexibility and skill to develop in parallel with new versions/features in Exchange • Meet backup/restore requirements • SLA • 100% ability to restore • Comprehensive support for tape autoloaders • Schedule & policy management • Cluster aware

  8. DogFoodProduction Lab ADIC 1000 6 Drives

  9. Enable DFSIM to Maintain Data Replica(Deploying CommVault (2000-2001) - phase 2) • Automatically refresh DFSIM with Dogfood production data • Both forests must share single ADIC 1000 & single CommServe • No impact to network or production server performance • Caveats: • All servers in DFSIM has same FQDN • How would a single server be able to differentiate between production and private network? • “Dogfood/DR” or “QR” was born to resolve our issue!

  10. Dogfood Production DFSIM ADIC 1000 6 Drives • Automatic backups • Scheduled restores • No human intervention • Do more interesting stuff

  11. Dogfood’s Data Mgt. Needs Grow(Deploying CommVault (2002-2003) - phase 3) • User base grows, data capacity doubles in size • Multiple Media agents required • 1 ADIC S1000 • 3 ADIC S100 • SAN • SAN support • Single D2D2T process (AUX copy) • Robust reporting functionality for single admin. Management • Support for multiple media agents and storage formats

  12. DogFoodProduction Lab DFSIM Lab 1 ADIC 1000 3 ADIC 100, 18 Drives • D2D2 via Xiotech • 2-4X Performance • Automatic D2D2Y • “Modern & Reliable”

  13. Dogfood Data Mgt. Needs in MSIT (Deploying CommVault (2004-2005) – phase 4) • Dogfood forest is now owned by MSIT • Protection during mass move • Building #33 to #11 • New Data Management requirements: • All previously listed functionality + • Cluster Aware media agents that fail over • Dynamic drive distribution sharing • Added support for CommServe Migration to DFSIM due to new physical location

  14. Dogfood’s Data Mgt. Needs Grow(Deploying CommVault (2005+) - phase 5) • Move data from Exchange team to MS / IT • Different buildings (33 to 11) • Fully roll-out Exchange – 12 (E-12) • Implement new x64 64-bit servers • CommVault software tuned and ported for Windows Server 2003 64-bit • Multiple Media agents required • 1 ADIC S1000 • 3 ADIC S100 • SAN • SAN support • Single D2D2T process (AUX copy) • Still required to backup Windows, AD, SharePoint, etc. • Deeper integration with MOM

  15. Microsoft IT DogFood 1 ADIC 1000 3 ADIC 100, 18 Drives • Fully running E-12 • X64 64-bit performance • Testing scale - out • Use 64-bit media agents

  16. My Favorite Features • Reporting and alerting functionality • Excellent support! • Commserve integrity assurance (ER) • Always listen to product improvement suggestions • 100% restore reliability • since my initial deployment of CommVault; we have never experienced a single instance where we were unable to recover our Exchange data!
