  1. Ancient Times

  2. With the Iron Age came what we now call ancient times:

  3. ancient Egypt,

  4. ancient Greece,

  5. and ancient Rome.

  6. Egypt was first to rise, along the mighty Nile River.

  7. The Egyptians used pictures to write with, called hieroglyphics,

  8. and they made art.

  9. The rulers of Egypt were called pharaohs,

  10. who built enormous pyramids

  11. and other tombs,

  12. where they put their family members after they died.

  13. These became mummies, surrounded by treasures.

  14. In the Fifth Century B.C. (that means, 500 years before Jesus Christ was born),

  15. there were many powerful towns, called city-states,

  16. around the Aegean Sea.

  17. They spoke the Greek language. They were the Greeks.

  18. Athens was the greatest ofthese city-states.

  19. In Athens three great thinkers taught: Socrates,

  20. who taught Plato,

  21. who taught Aristotle.

  22. Herodotus and Thucydides were the first great men to write down history, or what had happened in Greece.

  23. Euclid taught the world geometry,or all about shapes.

  24. The Greeks made beautiful statues,

  25. and painted figures on pots, like this.

  26. The Greeks had powerful warriors, called hoplites,

  27. and Alexander the Great was a young king

  28. who used hoplites to take over a large part of the world known then.

  29. The Greeks believed in many gods, like Zeus, the king of the gods,

  30. and Athena, the goddess of wisdom (being wise).

  31. The city-state Athens worshipped Athena especially,

  32. so they built a famous temple to Athena called the Parthenon.

  33. You can still see the Parthenon today in Athens!

  34. You can see many other ancient temples all around Greece today.

  35. The Greeks loved the poetry of Homer,

  36. who wrote The Iliad andThe Odyssey.

  37. After a few hundred years, another city became powerful: Rome.

  38. Roman soldiers made up an army

  39. and the Roman army was very powerful.

  40. The army of Rome came into Greece and told them what to do.The Romans were invaders.

  41. The Romans invaded many lands,

  42. southern and western Europe, and Egypt and Carthage, in north Africa.

  43. Then Rome wasa huge, rich, and famous city.

  44. It was where theRoman Senate ruled,

  45. and where the most famous Roman, Julius Caesar, became army general

  46. and consul, or ruler of all Roman lands.

  47. Cicero was a famous thinker who gave many speeches at the Senate.

  48. After 27 BC, Roman leaders could do whatever they wanted.They were called emperors.

  49. The first Roman emperorwas Augustus.
