  3. His madness is reveled through his efforts to convince us that he is sane • Unreliable narrator. Similar to Tell Tale Heart • He convinces us that he possesses a very calm disposition and that he is very compassionate. • The story describes his thought processes in more detail than the events themselves • He has a scheming mind. He carefully plans how he’s going to conceal his wife's body.

  4. Justifies his actions by placing blame on the cat • Loss of humanity • Portrayed to alcoholism • Pride in his deed by taunting the policeman • Wants the policemen to know • Genuinely believes what he’s done is right (in his state of mind)

  5. “And now I was indeed beyond the wretchedness of humanity” • He believes he has become something more than human. His “acute senses” were also referred to, in the telltale heart.
