  2. History of the Blackberry • In 1999, RIM, the maker of Blackberry, released the first Blackberry device, making email communications possible through wireless devices. The Blackberry is a device that not only functions as a telephone but also allows for the sending and receiving of email and text messages as well as web browsing. One of the main focuses of the early BlackBerry's was to allow for mobile email.

Knowing the Blackberry • Blackberries are smart phones that have complete internet access that allow you to search the web, check your favorite news, sports or entertainment sites and many other features. You can also create bookmarks, set RSS feeds and also view your history. It has GPS and mappings functions so you can always get directions. You can check your email in a matter of seconds. It also has a calendar, contacts, clock/alarm, tasks and memo pads.

  4. Types of Blackberries • There are many different types of Blackberries. Some of the more popular ones include the Blackberry Storm, Blackberry Curve, Blackberry Torch, and the Blackberry Bold. All these phones have complete internet access and have many updated features. They have a long lasting battery life and can be used pretty much all day.

  5. Comparing • The Blackberry that was introduced in 1999 is way different than today’s Blackberry. Todays blackberry has the latest high speed wireless networks. Not to mention Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a high quality camera, video recorder, radio, speakerphone, and many other features. You can download any app in minutes. • The blackberry that was introduced in 1999 was mainly for wireless emailing. There was no apps, or any other cool things that phones today have. As time has gone on these phones continue to advance. We now have the Blackberry PlayBook and Tablet.

  6. Competitors The primary competitors of the Blackberry are smartphones running with Android, the Apple iPhone, and Windows Phone. Blackberry has struggled to compete against Android and Apple and it’s market share has plunged in recent years, leading to speculation that it will be unable to survive as an independent business. However, it has managed to maintain, significant positions in some markets. Despite market share loss, on a global basis, the number of active Blackberry users has increased substantially between 2007 and 2012. At the end of 2008, RIM announced Blackberry had reached 21 million users. However, on June 28, 2012, RIM announced that Blackberry had reached 78 million users globally.
