  2. Metaphor • My metaphor is a teacher is like being a cattle herder. I believe this metaphor positions learning well, getting the cattle into a new and exciting paddock and that is similar to teaching children – it opens their eyes to a new exciting world (or in my metaphors case a new paddock). My metaphor suggest about my view of learning that teachers should be guiders and leaders. Also, once children have been given the chance to get to a new bright paddock their world is opened up and it is thanks to you – the teacher for giving them the chance to learn.

  6. Classroom Environment • To me, having the classroom in a horse shoe relates back to my metaphor on one main way. This is by allowing for the teacher to make eye contact with every student and to make sure look from a distance without having to be seen as getting in the way.

  7. Motivation • “Having student shape their learning experiences is an amazing way to help get and keep them motivated.” (pg 115 of Churchill et al.)

  8. Motivation • Teachers are like cattle herders, if one child comes off the path it is our job to reign them back in. Also, to stay motivated to stay on track. When you are a teacher you are trying to teach children things that are important and certain things they need to know. This is why I thought of cattle herding as you are trying to get the cattle into a new and exciting paddock and that is similar to teaching children – it opens their eyes to a new exciting world.

  9. Motivation • I hope through being a Reflective practitioner that I am able to look into my own beliefs and practices that I wish to be in place that I can allow for growth within my classroom. I believe that through motivation of encouragement and that the students are acquiring knowledge it will be opening their eyes to a new paddock (a new world).

  10. Criticism • Some people have been saying that perhaps my metaphor of being a cattle herder is that I would be pushy and believe that when teaching there is only one path to learning. This is not true, if one of my students is falling behind or becoming distracted it is my job as the teacher (the herder) to gently push my student back on track.
