  2. Information • It is believed that Kiev was discovered in the 9th century by a Slavic tribe and the tribe’s leaders name was Kyi.

  3. Info Continued • During the 8th and 9th centuries Kiev functioned as an outpost of the Khazar empire. A hill-fortress, called Sambatwas built to defend the area.

  4. Info again • Kiev was the center of Rus’ Polity and was ruled by the Varangian.

  5. Info once more • In the 1320s, a Lithuanian army led by Gediminas defeated the Slavic army led by Stanislav of Kiev at the Battle on the Irpen’ River, and conquered the city.

  6. Last fact • In 1492, most of Kiev was burned by the Crimean Tatars .
