  1. How is X-ray tomography helpful in non-destructive testing (NDT)? Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is widely used in a variety of industries as a testing and analysis technique to evaluate the properties of a part and find out characteristic differences, welding defects, and discontinuities without causing any damage to the original part. Non-destructive testing is also known by other names, such as non-destructive examination (NDE) and non-destructive inspection (NDI). While there are different methods available to carry out non- destructive testing, X-ray tomography is emerging as a very promising technology to understand the behavior of plastic material and perform quality control. How can X-ray tomography be used for the non-destructive evaluation of plastic components? X-ray tomography can be used for various types of evaluation of plastic parts without causing any damage to them. Some of these are: NDT with X-ray Tomography for Plastic Components: It can be used to measure the shrink holes and inclusions in welded plastic parts in a non-destructive way. It can accurately determine and provide the virtual section for the positioning of faults. It can also help non-destructively investigate hot gas welding parts for shrink holes. Apart from the position of the defects, X-ray tomography also makes it possible to mark the volume of the holes and check the severity of defects. NDT with X-ray Tomography for Wood Plastic Composite Parts: In addition to plastic components, X-ray tomography can also be used to non- destructively evaluate the wood-plastic composite (WPC) joints. WPC is a widely used material in the building sector, automotive sector, or furniture making sector.

  2. When parts are connected by bonding or welding, errors might develop in the joint plane which can reduce the strength of the connection with a great margin. However, with X-ray tomography, one can easily detect inclusions and analyze the orientation of the wood fibers in the joining plane that influences the strength of the connection or joint.
