  1. NASA's Icing Remote Sensing System:Recent Accomplishments Interagency Aviation Weather Research Coordination Meeting Boulder, Colorado December 2nd, 2010 Team: Dave Serke - NCAR PI Marcia Politovich - NCAR Andy Gaydos - NCAR engineer Chris Johnston - NCAR student Andy Reehorst - NASA GRC PI

  2. Background

  3. NIRSS Goal • Provide in-flight icing detection warning in the airport environment with relatively inexpensive, existing technologies.

  4. NIRSS

  5. NIRSS Display Reflectivity > NIRSS hazard product > < cloud mask < LWC < temp profile < ILW

  6. Recent Accomplishments

  7. NIRSS vs. CIP vs. PIREPs • Compare products/’truth’ icing severity (scale 0 to 8) from past 4 years • Warn volume: • NIRSS 13% • CIP 20% • NIRSS detects icing and non-icing at least as well as CIP in less warned volume

  8. NIRSS Supercooled Large Drop Detection Use Ka-band reflectivity and LWC derived from radiometer to derive a mean dropsize at each height in the profile Approach shows great promise in detecting large droplets (> 50 um)‏

  9. Narrowbeam Radiometer • Tested at CSU CHILL Aug-Sep 2009 • Apply NIRSS vertical pointing to airport terminal volume • Running Air Force's RADTRAN model • Derived ELEV angle-dependent coefficients for 3 channel LWP algorithm (w/ Univ. of Cologne)‏

  10. NIRSS as verification for satellite products Evaluation of cloud parameters and in-flight icing estimates derived from satellite using the NASA Glenn Icing Remote Sensing System, - '13th Conference on Cloud Physics', 28 June, 2010, Portland, OR Determining the effects of ice crystals on a satellite-based flight icing threat product in single-layer and multi-layer cloud conditions, - '13th Conference on Cloud Physics', 28 June, 2010, Portland, OR New methods to infer aircraft icing conditions using satellite data - 'International Conference on Aircraft and Engine Icing and Ground De-Icing', 13-17 June 2011 Chicago, IL

  11. NIRSS @ Colorado Front Range • Locate to Platteville, CO Nov '10-May '11 • Goals: • Support NIRSS development and validation • Support MIT-LL 'Icing Hazard Level' algorithm development for NEXRADs • Support NSSL/NWS 'NEXRAD polarization - icing hydrometeor classification' CHILL NIRSS S-Pol DIA
