  3. Outline • Preparations • Main principles • Experiences

  4. Preparations • Draw up routines and procedures • How to utilise the advantage of the new system • Ensure proper familiarisation and operator training • Basic IMO ECDIS course module • Type-specific ECDIS familiarisation • Simulator training • Knowledge of electronic charts • Onboard training

  5. Main principles • Use ENCs where available • Use the same principles as with paper charts • Navigation aids • Preparations should allow for simple verifying by radar • Verify GPS-position displayed on ECDIS • Main focus is still out the windows..

  6. Experiences (1) • Time-consuming familiarisation • Especially with regard to capabilities and limitations • Still need better knowledge of the ENC

  7. Experiences (2) • Tradition • New generation of navigators • Education • Requires a lot of time • Good procedures can get you a long way

  8. Experiences (3) • IMO approval and special requirements for combat vessels • Connection to combat information center (CIC) on board • Transition period • New vessels = golden opportunity • Caveats • RNoN now follows the same rules as all civilian shipping • Maritime certificates

  9. Summary • Education took a lot more time than we expected – still not quite there.. • Advantages given to us by e-nav are not yet fully incorporated • This will change with new vessels fully operational.
