  3. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • Collaborative workshops guidingthemes : • Focus on digital pedagogy, with a historical note • Identify issues around the distance learning arrangements • Introduce your own experiences or realizations in terms of ODL (Online Distance Learning) • Approach conception and realization of ODL through practical workshops (Moodle et MOOC) • Share digital pedagogy experiences • Discuss encountered issues related to the discipline (round table)

  4. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) Three different professional profiles, a teacher-researcher, an educational engineer and an IS director, whose expertise are directly involved in the design and production of e-learning. Their collaboration is essential, flexible, and must aim at the proper integration of these devices within a course plan, depending on the specificities of the institution concerned (elementary, secondary, higher education). All the issues must be taken into consideration, whether they are pedagogical, institutional or political.

  5. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • Contents Monday morning, January 21, 2019 • Digital pedagogy, general introduction: • Facilities • Integration modalities • Teaching modalities • My statement and my approach will be correlated to my area of expertise and will focus on the integration of digital pedagogy and distance learning devices within Information Systems. Pedagogical engineering will also be discussed.

  6. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) There is not only one digital pedagogy but several digital pedagogies. There is not only one distance learning facility but several distance learning facilities. There is not a typical course used for different facilities. A variety of courses can be offered depending on a given framework and the learning objectives defined by the teacher; Framework : an institution, teachers, disciplines, curriculum, learners, expertises, infrastructures, a constrained framework (financial & human resources).

  7. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) Presentation of Inalco in order to better understand the digital strategy defined for pedagogical purposes within the institution, and the choices made about distance learning facilities, their integration and the technologies employed.

  8. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • Languages and civilizations are taught at Inalco since 1795. • It is a French Higher Education and Research Institution, recognized as a grand établissement. • Its commitments • Develop knowledge of the world’s cultures and civilizations • Provide unique expertise on the contemporary world • Celebrate difference

  11. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) 100 languages and civilizations available in BA, MA, PhD and diplomas Research combines area studies and academic fields Inalco is member of ComuE USPC (Sorbonne Paris Cité University)

  12. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) Disciplines such as linguistics and language teaching are confronted to technologic constraints in the context of Distance Learning. Writtencomprehension and production Oral comprehension and production These learnings reflect the specificity of this type of digital facility, whether or not in the context of automatic processing of data produced in a curriculum, improvement and the assessment mechanism put in place.

  13. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • In terms of pedagogical engineering, • The main technologic issues encountered are: • Writtencomprehension and production • Digital coding of writingsystems • Digital coding of characters (unicodenorm) • Assessment of digital written production • Assessment of manuscript production

  14. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • Oral comprehension and production • Assessment of oral compehension • Oral production and assessment • Native language and Dialects • More broadly, how to apprehend a language that is based on linguistic constructions far removed from our first language, constructions that are based on conceptual approaches that we first need to understand and integrate. • (Mandarin / ideogram, language of oral tradition ...)

  15. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) Digital pedagogy could be defined as “the use and / or integration of digital technologies in education”. It is more commonly a multidisciplinary approach (didactics, psychology, neurosciences, education sciences, technological sciences, epistemology …). There is an ideologicaldebate on this topic in France.

  16. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • From an optimistic point of view, it is considered • as a response to the education issues of the • 20th century, namely : • Tackle low academic achievement • Promote equal opportunities • Bring back the pleasure of learning to students • Enhance the status of teachers • Digital pedagogy appears to be more active, differential and collaborative, to increase confidence, autonomy, creativity and curiosity among learners.

  17. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) From a pessimistic point of view, digital pedagogy seems to be designed, integrated and proposed only in the context of the In the context of commodification of knowledge, underpinned by concepts of performance and massification, to the detriment of knowledge transmitted in the specific teacher-student relationship. Digital Pedagogy would impoverish the learners relationship to knowledge, restrict the quality of learning process to the limits of technological solutions, reduce the level of quality of pedagogical contents and goals.

  18. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • I will discuss digital pedagogy in the context of my • own area of expertise, meaning the strategy • specific Information System and Pedagogical • Engineering. • - IS • Information System (IS) is an organized set of resources that collects, stores, processes and distributes information through computer, electronic and telecommunication technologies. • - Pedagogical Engineering • Pedagogical Engineering consists in studying, conceiving, producing and adapting teaching devices, trainings or classes.

  19. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) In the context of IS’s evolutions and urbanization, digital pedagogy implemented depends on the existing infrastructures. This existing IS ensures the reliability and continuity of services on distance learning devices and make it possible to support and integrate new devices based on new technologies. The conception, structuration, integration, strengthening, maintenance, management, administration of an IS is based on multiple expertises and professions.

  20. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • Pedagogical engineering addresses training • management projects by focusing on the 3 main • entities of the « learning triangle » : • Learner-trainee entity • Knowledgeentity • Trainer-Facilitator entity • The management of the relationship between the 3 entities relies on: • Time ( synchronous / asynchronous training) • Place (face-to-face / distance training) • Action (individualized/collective training) • Source https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingénierie_pédagogique

  21. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) • The last dimension taken into consideration by the • Pedagogical Engineer is the management of • the learning process arrangements : • The use of technologies • Informal training • Support… • Five steps are necessary to lead a pedagogical project, based on the ADDIE model (Analysis-Design-Development-Implementation-Evaluation) : • 1st step: analyze the starting point with a diagnostic, • 2nd step: elaborate the device’s design • 3rd step: develop tools • 4th step: conduct training activities • 5th step: evaluate and regulate the functioning • Source https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ingénierie_pédagogique

  22. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) Technologies allow and require different pedagogical practices. Technologies are not necessarily a lever for pedagogical innovation.

  23. Training workshop on new technologies and pedagogy (example of Moodle and MOOCs) To stay in the spirit of these workshops, we will go through a brief glossary to present an overview of the devices and teaching methods in the context of digital pedagogy. I will first introduce the ODL put in place at Inalco and the reasons of this choice.
