43.A.D.: the Emperor Claudius orders an expedition against Britain. • The Romans conquer much of Britain in the short time of forty years. • At the same time the famous Hadrian’s wall is built. • The Roman rule ends in 410
Anglos, Saxons and Jutes • 430: Saxons, under the leadership of Aella, begin attacking the coast of Sussex. • Britain asks the Anglos and Saxons of Germany and the Jutes of Denmark for assistance
“Alfred the Great” defeats the Danes. Their rule is confined to the eastern part of England. • 1066 :The Battle of Hastings, a very bloody combat. • Harold, the last Anglo-Saxon king gets killed. • After this battle William occupies England.
Feudalism was an ineffective central government. • 1154-98, Henry II, first of the Angevin kings, introduces a new Jury system called Circuit Courts and Common Law in England • At the same time Royal Power becomes gradually centralised.
