  1. Validating Models of the Corona and Inner Heliosphere SHINE 2011 Snowmass, Colorado July 13.

  2. Rationale • Models of the corona and inner heliosphere are increasingly used by users other than the developers and in operational space weather • Except for the SDO comparative study of NLFFF codes, no attempt has been made to have all competing models run the same ‘test’ cases • If they run the same problem do they get the same answer? • A necessary stage in the maturation of any modeling field • Seems timely to review the communities approach • 2 LWS Strategic Capability models to be delivered this year • SDO dataset poised(?) to cause explosion in use of models • Informal meeting at last year’s SHINE polled developers – hope to get started this year

  3. Goals of Session • To assess the readiness of these codes for this type of study • To have all stakeholders participate in selecting a set of test problems to be used to expose the strengths and weaknesses of the competing codes • To establish a timeline and milestones

  4. Logistics • Pete Riley and Bart Van Der Holst have agreed to act as co-discussion leaders • Advertised session in widely distributed email to developers, users and funders • Encouraged participants to offer ideas in 2 or 3 slides and 5 minute slots • Still a few slots available
