  1. CI337: Interaction Design lab Semester 1 10 CATS points Compulsory for DMD – everyone welcome Lyn Pemberton

  2. The Theme of the Module People who work in interactive digital systems need to have creative design skills - graphic design, interaction design, information design, product design. These are transferable skills that will keep you fresh and employable as technologies move on. Creative design methods can be taught and acquired, ideally through practice in sympathetic context

  3. Content • Four “mini-projects” each practicing different methods to generate, evaluate, develop, prototype and present creative design concepts (in random rotating groups, formed by lecturer) • For instance - home information service for flat dwellers, interactive TV service for MTV, what will time keeping look like in 20 years, how to persuade children to wear cycle helmets via a Flash game… • Mostly in new Creativity Space in Engineering block • Everything from brainstorming to meditation and drawing with the right side of the brain

  4. Assessment • A design log/sketch and idea book • Develop a design or prototype for a product or service of your own (leads naturally into Entrepreneurship if you choose)

Theme There’s a growing demand in the UK for specialists in user experience (user centred design, usability, accessibility, information architecture…), concentrating on quality of user interaction. This module gives space to concentrate on evaluation apart from design and development issues, using industry-standard software and techniques.

  7. Topics • Planning evaluation • Carrying out user observation • Using Morae • Questionnaires and interviews • Writing up a useful client report • Legal & regulatory issues • ------------------------------------------ • Evaluating at a distance • Different user groups, e.g. children, care home workers • Evaluating non-desktop systems, e.g. outdoor mobile games, gym equipment • Beyond usability - acceptability, understanding • Plus guest speakers
