  1. 3 Most Effective Preventive Measures for Tooth Decay

  2. Dental caries or tooth decay is one of the most prevalent and major oral health problems globally, especially in the most industrialized countries. The number of people affected including schoolchildren, adolescents and adults have reached to about 60 to 90%. Tooth decay is basically the damage on the enamel of the teeth caused by the action of acids from the food that we eat. People with poor oral hygiene are the most affected because they develop plaque easily and these plaques in the surface of the teeth harbor infectious microorganisms or bacteria that reacts with the sugar component of the food and drinks which is sucrose. The acids that are produced because of the bacterial interaction would, therefore, cause the condition we call as dental caries.

  3. Dental caries is developed when the enamel of the teeth are weakened and then collapses; this will then form a cavitation and if not treated promptly will destroy the entire tooth and may also affect the adjacent teeth. The roots of the teeth can also be the point of attack due to gum recession that exposes the roots of the teeth; this is a condition which is more prevalent in most adults. However, with the alarming number of the population that is affected with this oral health problem, dentists have recommended effective ways aiming to prevent dental caries before it actually starts. Here are some advice that your dentist can share:

  4. The effective use of fluoride is essential in dental caries prevention. Fluoride is actually a naturally existing substance and is present in some water sources especially those that have not been chemically treated. Water fluoridation has been one of the ways that some countries like Ireland have implemented to reduce the number of people suffering from tooth decay.

  5. Reduction in the amount and frequency of sugar consumption is also another effective way to ward off the possibility of developing dental caries. It has been mentioned in most clinical studies that the main cause of the destruction of the teeth and the development of dental caries is caused by the acids that are produced between the reaction of sucrose and the bacteria harbored inside the mouth particularly in the plaques. Reduction in the intake of these sugars will, therefore, decrease reduce the risk of developing dental caries in all ages.

  6. Then again, one of the best preventive measures ever advised by the dental experts is the practice of proper oral hygiene such as proper brushing techniques and flossing. It has also been advised that people especially the children should have a regular visit to their dentist for a checkup and professional oral prophylaxis.
