Commission for Educational Technology • Oversee Educational Technology efforts in Connecticut. • Establish the Connecticut Education Network. • Establish rigorous standards in technology competency for students, teachers, and administrators. • Assist in the development of the Connecticut Parent Technology Academy. • Establish the Connecticut Digital Library.

  4. Commission Composition • 20 Commissioners • 5 Agency Commissioners • DOIT, SDE, State Library, DPUC, SDHE • UConn, CSU, CommTech Colleges, Charter Oak • Leaders from K-12, Business, libraries • CET replaces JCET • DOIT assigned as primary lead on network http://www.ctedtech.org

Connecticut Education Network “A five-year plan … to provide state-of-the-art, high-speed, reliable Internet access and video, voice and data transmissions that electronically link all educational institutions in the state, including public and independent institutions of higher education, the state's libraries and all elementary, middle and secondary schools …

CEN Basics • Backbone Engineered for “Peak” throughput • All edge links => 155 Mbps • All core links => 622 Mbps • An “optical” grade connection for every district & campus • Hand-off is 100BaseT or 1000BaseT Port • Router and/or switch provided at each edge site • Internet Service “included” for K12 & Libraries • N2H2 based Filtering & Firewall through DOIT • A local responsibility to link remote sites to CEN hub in each district • DOIT will assign 10.128 to 10.143 for each K12 district • Higher Education Sites use their own addressing & ISP • Served hosts may receive a CTEDTECH.ORG DNS entry

  13. Core sites are fully redundant and run a separate backbone between sites • Gig-E links between schools are cascaded along the route to optimize fiber • CWDM or DWDM can be employed when GigE insufficient

  14. What do you need to do? • Maintain / Upgrade in-district networks • Watch contract renewal dates • Verify & Keep current Information we have • Network Diagram • IP Addressing & config to your current ISP • Demarcation Street Address • WAN plans you have in the district • Help plan/install fiber cable installation • Help keep schedules tight, communicate issues (site visits) • Monthly -> Biweekly Conference Calls

  15. Other Issues • Connections to Libraries • Municipal Connections & ISP Services • Service Level Agreements • Options for WAN services through DOIT contracts

Phase III Thoughts • Hoping to receive funding to reach the (entire) rest of state next fiscal year • Increasing volume means we need to streamline cutover processes • Expect to issue another RFP for additional leased fiber services • Crossover with Municipal & Government Network planning increasingly important
