Onésime Reclus, a French geographer, coined the term ‘francophonie’ in the nineteenth century. Find out more about the countries of la Francophonie here: www.francophonie.org

  10. Un peu de fun.Nommez les premiers ministres et présidents. Emmanuel Macron (France) Leo Varadkar (Rep. of Ireland) Justin Trudeau (Canada) Theresa May (UK) Angela Merkel (Germany)

  11. What did Leo Varadkar give Justin Trudeau when he visited Ireland? Socks! Justin Trudeau was once photographed wearing a pair of Star Wars socks, so, to honour Trudeau’s penchant for unusual socks, Varadkar wore a pair of red maple leaf socks at an event during this state visit. Varadkar also gave Trudeau a pair of Irish-themed socks as a gift!

  12. Where did Trudeau stay during his visit to Ireland? Farmleigh House in the Phoenix Park

  13. Guess who wrote each of the following tweets about Trudeau’s visit to Ireland. • ‘We are liked-minded as countries and like-minded as people.’ • Leo Varadkar • ‘The sun came out just in time for a quick chance to see more of this beautiful part of Dublin on foot ... nice place.’ • Justin Trudeau

  14. Vraiou faux ? Learning a foreign language makes you smarter. Vrai ! Learning a second language improves your memory and increases your attention span. The process of becoming bilingual exercises your brain, challenges you to concentrate and boosts your problem-solving skills. Bilingual people have been shown to be more logical and to have better decision-making skills. Learning a second language also improves your native language, as it teaches you something about the mechanics and structures behind all languages. In your class, are there students whose first language is not English, and who are now also learning French? What is their experience of language-learning?

  15. Vraiou faux ? Learning a foreign language makes you more employable. Vrai ! Potential employers see you as an asset when you can speak more than one language. Within the changing world of work, language skills are crucial. Ireland is an island and our economy does a lot of business with Europe. In recognition of this, the Minister for Education has produced a National Language Strategy that invests millions of euros in improving our language skills in Ireland. Jobs that may require a foreign language include nurse, engineer, doctor and teacher.
