Vocabulary • Input Overload – Sending too high of a signal level into a device so that the first amplifier of the device overloads. • Sample – To record a short audio segment for the purpose of playback/editing later. • Ambience – The portion of the sound that comes from the surrounding environment rather than directly from the sound source. • Analog Recording – A recording in which the original wave in its original form. • Digital Recording – A recording in which the original wave is converted into numbers that are stored in a digital device.

  3. Analog –vs– Digital Analog Digital • Converts the original wave and converts it into numbers. • Recordings are less likely to degrade over time. • Much easier to manipulate. An example of a digital recording would be recording a speech/song to the hard drive of your computer. • Stores the EXACT wave that is created • Recordings can degrade over time • More difficult to manipulate. An example of an analog recording would be recording a speech/song directly to a tape (cassette tape).
