Advice to Sustainability Officers and Committees: • It’s never too early to learn your campuses schedule and process for Master Planning and start asking when sustainability will be incorporated • Be aware that other planning exercises may be the prelude to Master Planning (e.g. Strategic Planning)

  3. UW Oshkosh is working on its Master Plan • -- three perspectives for Sustainability • Sustainability Plan recommendations and goals are being cited to drive planning • Sustainability Goals = State Goals, which drive planning • Recommendations and goals of other campus units create new challenges to sustainability

Sustainability Plan  Master Plan: Example • Transportation Goal: Reduce single-occupancy automobile commuting by 20% • Past Concern in Master Planning: more parking • UWS supported additional contractor support for a transportation study to consider: • Parking Space Count and Policies • Off-campus Street Parking • Bike Parking • Bike and Pedestrian Pathways • Transit Systems

  5. Sustainability Goals = State Goals : Example • Stormwater Goal: Reduce pollutant loads to meet state 2013 deadline • Past Concern in Master Planning: flooding • UWS supported additional contractor support for a stormwater study to: • Model pollutant loads • Recommend structural solutions

  6. Main Campus: • About half of land is building or paved • Flat, not many places to collect water • Short trip to the river by pipes

  7. Transportation: • Maintain same # parking spaces as we grow • Stormwater: • Add infiltration to/near parking lots • Result is not ideal: • More acres for Parking+swales • Still does not meet state stormwater goals

  8. Other campus units create new challenges to sustainability – Example A revenue-generating campus division would like to air condition their buildings -- engineering studies show it will increase cooling by 60%.

Sustainability Impacts: -- 18% increase in electricity use -- 7% increase in greenhouse gas emissions -- Counter to Sustainability Plan recommendation to cool fewer buildings in summer -- Shows that our bottom line is single (financial), maybe double (comfort = social), but not yet triple (including environmental)
