  1. Title: Fuel Economy Management of KOREA MOLITPresenter’s Name: Sung Bok EomEconomy: Rep. of KOREA

  2. Contents 1. Introduction 2. Major technologies for improving Fuel Economy 3. Conclusion

  3. 1. Introduction ㅇFuel Economy of a vehicles is an important factor to determine the overall vehicle performance ㅇFuel Economy is a characteristic which is not the typical single device but integration of overall device and structure. ㅇIn particular, it is closely related with the main vehicle safety factors- vehicle weight, engine and transmission, etc.

  4. Weight Optimization 2. Major Technologies to Improve Vehicle Fuel Economy Engine Performance Driving Performance (Tire, etc) Aerodynamics & Energy Savings Fuel System

  5. Major Technologies to Improve Vehicle Fuel Economy(Cont.) ㅇWeightOptimization - Vehicle weight decrease can improve fuel economy but the vehicle safety performance could be reduced. - Vehicle weight decreases 10%, FE is improved 3∼4% (Transportation Technology Status Report (California Energy Commission, 1997.12)) Reduction of Vehicle weight could cause safety problem in the field of occupant protection in frontal & side impact and roof crush test.

  6. Major Technologies to Improve Vehicle Fuel Economy(Cont.) ㅇTire & Transmission - Addition of more gears, Automatic manual T/M, Continuously variable T/M) - Rollingresistance reduce 10%,FE improve1%~2%(for pass. veh.),1%~3%(for HMDT) (Tire Rolling Resistance, Its Impact on Fuel Economy, and Measurement Standards (Tim J. LaClair, Ph.D. Presentation to the California Energy Commission, Michelin)) Reduction of the rolling resistance induces a decrease in ground contact area of tire. And it cause increase in braking distance by about 2%.

  7. Major Technologies to Improve Vehicle Fuel Economy(Cont.) ㅇEngine Performance & Fuel System - Cylinder deactivation(some of the cylinder shuts down when full power is not needed) - Engine down sizing, Turbocharging system, etc. - Improve combustion efficiency through GDI or Diesel, etc. ㅇAerodynamics & Energy Savings - Drag reduction design - Energy saving design for the devices related to safe driving. (A/C sys. LED Lighting, Thermal Insulation, De-mist & De-frost sys, etc) Performance improvement of engine technology has reached the limit.

  8. 3. Conclusion • Fuel Economy of the Vehicle is directly related to the Vehicle Safety. (such as Frontal & Side Impact, Roof Crush and Braking Performance Test, etc) • For this reason, vehicle safety compliance and fuel economy must be considered simultaneously in order to release the results of fuel economy test to the public. To prevent any safety related issues that could break out after public release of Fuel Economy results.

  9. Conclusion(Cont.) For this, Korea MOLIT do the best 1. To promote of fuel economy improvement & enhance vehicle safety through R & D - Development of safety assessment technology on EFV(HEV, EV and HFCV, etc.) & ASV 2. To prevent Fuel Economy hype to public, MOLIT conduct compliance test - in 2013, Fuel Economy compliance test for 10type of vehicles
