  2. Painting with light To realise the power of light and what it can do to the mind of the audience, imagine the following scene: The room is dark. A strong streak of light sneaks in from under the door. The sound of steps is heard. The shadows of two feet divide the light streak. A brief silence follows. There is suspense in the air. Who is it? Another heavier shadow appears and blocks the light entirely . A dim hissing is heard, and as the shadows leave we see in the strong light a paper slip onto the carpet . We read it as the steps fade out in the Distance. “Its 10 pm. Please turn your radio off.”

Neo-Noir Era • Most try to recreate noir mood by director's familiar with noir’s Classic period • Often emphasise a sense of forlorn romanticism, the need to love and be loved in a society that venerates only sex and money • Characters are deceived, shattered, fatally attracted and sleeping with the enemy • Impersonal urban sprawl • Echoes classic period – undercurrent of despair, dark visual style, moving in a corrupt world
