  5. Law of the Sea Treaty(LOST) • Here's a brief update on last week's report regarding the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST). Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) announced yesterday that Senators Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Rob Portman (R-OH) and Johnny Isakson (R-GA) have declared their opposition to the treaty. That means 34 senators are now on the record against the treaty, and that is precisely the number needed to prevent the treaty's ratification.

  6. United Nations Arms Trade Treaty • At last count, 55 senators, including 10 Democrats, have signed letters to the president and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton saying they will oppose the Arms Trade Treaty. • "Our country's sovereignty and the Second Amendment rights of American citizens must not be infringed upon by the United Nations," Kansas Senator Moran (R) wrote in the letter. "Today, the Senate sends a powerful message to the Obama Administration: an Arms Trade Treaty that does not protect ownership of civilian firearms will fail in the Senate. Our firearm freedoms are not negotiable." • Second Amendment: the right to bear arms • Treaties need a two-thirds majority in the Senate to be ratified.

  8. Discussion Questions for Lamentations 3:19-27 • Lamentations 3:19-27 is pivotal to understanding the path of hope. In this passage, Jeremiah begins with making the statement that his soul is humbled. What does it mean to be humbled? Can you think of a time in your life where you were brought low? • In the Bible, the word hope is used to describe a confident expectation and certain trust. Nowadays, the word hope is often used to express a desire, a wish, or a longing. Can you think of a couple common examples of how you or others use the word hope? What are some of the objects that people tend to place their hope? Jeremiah writes (3:21) that he “recalls” something to mind and that gives him a confident expectation? What does Jeremiah recall to mind?

  9. Discussion Questions for Lamentations 3:19-27 • Lamentations 3:19-27 references six specific attributes of God. Please take the time to read these eight verses and see if you can identify these attributes. Please list the six attributes. • How would you individually describe these attributes of God? What is it about these attributes of God that gives a person or family a confident expectation in the Lord?

  10. Discussion Questions for Lamentations 3:19-27 • Within Jeremiah’s lament, one can see the steps that must be taken in order to develop a person’s hope or confident expectation in the Lord. From the text, what are the steps that you observe? What are some practical ways to begin following these steps? • Have you ever experienced this type of re-focus? You could call it a ‘Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus’ moment? If you remember the old hymn, then you may remember that the hymn states that when you turn your eyes upon Jesus that then earthly things grow dim in the light of glory and grace. When was the last time you faced hardship, and NOTHING changed? Your sickness continued, your children continued to rebel, your boss continued to disrespect you, yet you re-focused your attentions to God, and you found a confident expectation in the Lord?

  11. Discussion Questions for Lamentations 3:19-27 • How would you describe “the yoke” that is mentioned in Lamentations 3:27? Many Biblical scholars believe that the word “yoke” describes the suffering a child of God experiences as they grow and discover the disciplining nature of God’s love. What are some ways that God has used the experience of suffering to purify and perfect you. In Hebrews 2:10, what did God use to perfect Christ? If God used the yoke to train His only begotten Son, should we be surprised when he uses suffering to purify and perfect us?

I believe that You are merciful, compassionate and faithful. I believe Jesus demonstrated these qualities when He died for me on the cross. I ask that you be merciful to me a sinner. My hope of going to heaven is because of You and Your Son’s resurrection. I pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
