Terms of Reference • Studies relating to ubiquitous applications, multimedia capabilities for services and applications for existing and future networks, including NGN and beyond. • Accessibility, multimedia architectures, terminals, protocols, signal processing, media coding and systems • Network signal processing equipment, multipoint conference units, gateways, gatekeepers, … • Lead SG on: • multimedia coding, systems and applications • ubiquitous applications ("e-everything", such as e-health) • telecommunication/ICT accessibility for persons with disabilities

Highlights of achievements (I) • Consolidation of H.264 and firm steps towards its successor – with MPEG • HEVC approval expected 1st quarter 2013 • Scalability and 3D extensions to follow • IPTV family of standards (H.700-series) grew considerably • Terminals, frameworks, audience measurement, digital signage • C&I specs developed, Interop events organized • First Recs for USN ( IoT), Visual surveillance, tag-based identification (with JTC1 SC 31)

Highlights of achievements (II) • Maintenance of essential systems • H.320 & H.323 • Media gateway protocols • Network signal processing • Voiceband data over IP networks • Directory services, QoS • Extension of audio and image coding • G.71x – G.72x audio codecs and tools extended: GSAD, wideband, superwideband, fullband • JPEG, JPEG-2000 and new JPEG-XR • Progress on Telepresence, AMS, ITS and relay services • One Focus Group: Audiovisual Media Accessibility (Rumors of its death have been greatly exaggerated…)

Future Work • SG participation indicators relatively stable: continued interest from membership • subordinate groups: participation increased (FG AVA, JCTs with JTC1) • Main production is "home grown" (rather than rubberstamping) • Coordination with external players remain high on the agenda • Continue focus on infrastructure-agnostic MM architectures that enable high layer applications such as: • Accessibility for persons with disabilities • New and enhanced services and systems: IPTV, Digital Signage • Internet of Things* • Intelligent Transportation Systems* • E-health • Media coding • Enhancing existing families of standards * Lead SG role proposed

Conclusion • Successful in the 2009-2012 period • Large production, sustained participation despite economic crisis • Increased interest on infrastructure-agnostic systems and services • Several strong lines of work • Keep nurturing and adjusting course • Cross-sector areas require additional effort for getting started • ITS, e-health • Innovative working methods are needed

  9. Thank you! Mr Yushi Naito is chairman of ITU-T Study Group 16, managing creation of ITU-T standards in the area of multimedia coding, systems and applications. Mr Naito is a Senior Technical Adviser at the Information Technology R&D Center of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, where he started in 1975 developing satellite communication systems, and later worked in research and development of speech coding and network signal processing equipment. His ITU experience started in 1990 with network signal processing equipment standardization in ITU-T Study Group 15, taking the lead role of Rapporteur in 1992 and later becoming Working Party chairman in SG 15 and in SG 16, before assuming SG 16 chairmanship in 2008. He also contributed to standardization in ITU-T Study Groups 9, 11, 12 and 13. He regularly contributes to other ITU-T activities, in particular IPTV and ITS/Vehicular Communications (in particular ITU-T Focus Groups FG-FITCAR, FG-FITCAR II and FG-CarCOM).
