  1. Cutting instruments DR.LINDA MAHER

  2. Hand cutting instruments are used for cutting or removal of tooth structure. Bevels of the blade: 1\(single beveled): Most of hand cutting instruments have one bevel at the end of the blade that forms the primary cutting edge

  3. 2\(bi-beveled): instruments have two bevels that forms the cutting edge (e.g. hatchet excavator)

  4. CUTTING INSTRUMENTS EXCAVATOR CHISELS OTHERS 1)ORDINARY HATCHET 2) HOE 3) ANGLE FORMER 4) SPOON 1) CHISEL 2)ENAMEL HATCHET 3) GINGIVAL MARGIN TRIMMER KNIVES FILES SCALERS CARVERS

  5. 1\CHISELS USED FOR: cutting undermined enamel (week enamel). Used with push motion. They are 3 types : 1\Straight, slightly curved or bin-angle. 2\Enamel hatchets. 3\Gingival margin trimmer. Undermined enamel

  6. 1\STRAIGHT,SLIGHTLY CURVED :AND BINANGLED CHESILS • The cutting edge of chisel is at right angle to the handle. • The cutting edge formed by a bevel on one side only. • Used with push motion.

  7. USED TO: cleave undermined enamel

  8. 2\ENAMEL HATCHET: • The cutting edge is in a plane parallel or near to parallel to the long axis of the handle.(BASICALLY IT IS THE SAME AS AN AXE) • The cutting edge formed by a bevel on one side only. • Used with push motion. • It is available in right & left types.

  9. USED TO: cut undermined enamel

  10. 3\GINGIVAL MARGIN TRIMMER: • Similar in design to enamel hatchet except the blade is curved. • Used with pushing & lateral scraping motion.

  11. USES: It is used to smooth the gingival floor of a cavity preparation.

  12. 2\EXCAVATORS • These instruments are designed to excavate and remove carious dentin and to shape the internal parts of cavities. • They are of different types: • Hoe excavator. • Hatchet excavator. • Spoon excavator. • Angle former

  13. 1\HOE EXCAVATOR: • Cutting edge nearly perpendicular to handle. • Used with a pulling motion

  14. USE: used to plan walls and floors of cavity preparation and forming line angles

  15. 2\HATCHET EXCAVATOR: • Its cutting edge parallel to the long axis of the handle. • DEFFERS FROM ENAMIL HATCHET IN THAT: • 1\the cutting edge have two bevels • 2\enamel hatchet is larger and heavier USE: .These instruments are used on sharpening internal angles.

  16. :3\ANGLE FORMER EXCAVATOR Mono angled instrument with primary cutting edge at angle other than 90 degree to the blade USE: For sharpening internal line angles

  17. :4\SPOON EXCAVATORS • It has two types: 1.Discoid: Cutting edges are circular. 2.Cleoid: Cutting edges are claw like.

  18. USES: 1. for scooping out carious dentine. 2. also for carving amalgam.

  19. OTHER CUTTING INSTRUMENTS • 1\KNIFES: Function: used for trimming excessive restorative materials

  20. 2\ENDODONTIC FILES: function: to remove dead pulp

  21. 3\SICKLE SCALER: Function: To remove large amounts of deposits (calculus) from supra- gingival surfaces, ideal for anterior interproximal area.
