  1. ACCENT: Description, Operation, Results and AchievementsSandro FuzziACCENT Coordinator

  2. Atmospheric change, environment, climate • Changes in atmospheric composition directly affect many aspects of life, determining climate, air quality and atmospheric inputs to ecosystems • In turn, these changes affect the fundamental necessities for human existence: human health, food production, ecosystem health and water

  3. What is a Network of Excellence ? • A Network of Excellence (NoE) is primarily a strategic instrument to overcome the fragmentation of European research • It is aimed at creating a progressive and durable integrationof the research capacities of the participants, enhancing at the same time knowledge on the research topic

  4. Aims of ACCENT • ACCENT aims at becoming a platform where European scientists can converge to promote: • a common strategy for research on atmospheric composition change • develop and maintain durable means of communication and collaboration within the European scientific community • facilitate research in this field • optimise interactions with policy-makers and general public and preparing a new generation of atmospheric scientists and increasing the expertise to a common level across Europe

  5. What does ACCENT include? Jointly executed research A scientific program carried out jointly by the participants involving mainly nationally funded activities Integrating activities Co-ordinate scientific programmes in a complementary way, sharing tools and facilities, exchange of personnel Activities to spread excellence Training of young scientists, dissemination of knowledge, dissemination and communication towards the public, understanding of science, exploitation of results, socio-economic evaluations

  6. ACCENT structure

  7. The Network • 36 Institutions from 18 EU Member States (including 4 New Members) • One Institution from a Candidate Country (BG) • One International Organisation (IIASA) • 4 Institutions from Associated Countries (N, CH) • The Joint Research Centre of the European Commission

  8. ACCENT Associates • Associates contribute their expertise towards the goals and activities of ACCENT; they benefit directly from the Network's joint research, integration and dissemination activities such as conferences, workshops, access to data, access to facilities, web-based information, education and training tools

  9. ACCENT Associates • Two calls for Associates • March 2005 • April 2006 • 124 Institutions from 33 Countries, including U.S., Canada, Japan, China

  10. ACCENT time schedule • ACCENT has started March 1, 2004 • ACCENT will run for 5 years • Implementation activities are well underway for all tasks/subprojects • All activities have already produced important results

  11. ACCENT Review • ACCENT is reviewed annually by independent referees • We had back a few weeks ago the second year review: • Good to excellent project. The project has fully achieved its objectives and technical goals for the period and has even exceeded expectations

  12. www.accent-network.org “The web portal aims to be the main tool for communication within ACCENT, to disseminate knowledge to users outside the network and to provide a platform for dialogue between research and society”

  13. DATABASE

  14. Several inventories provided for each species Tools for evaluation and intercomparison available soon

  15. NO2 O3 CH4 CO H2O BrO SO2 HCHO Aerosol

  16. ACCENT MetaDataBase • An advanced application that allows to search for generic data, but is also customisable to ensure that it can meet the needs of any data type, This ensures that the system will be used by the ACCENT community as well as by general users. • In addition, the MDB has advanced filter tools to allow users to 'weed out' unwanted search results • And as this system expands in the future, the user will have access to more data, without being overwhelmed by the search results, because only relevant results are returned by the search, thanks to the filter tools.

  17. FIELD CAMPAIGNS • and • EXPERIMENTS

  18. 2005 BIAFLUX joint field campaign-Braunschweig Field, Germany • Focus on reactive Nitrogen and Ozone. • 2006 BIAFLUX joint field campaign- • Castelporziano (Rome), Italy • Focus on VOC and aerosol fluxes • Aerosol fluxes: AMS, CPC, UHSAS • VOC fluxes: PTR, REA with GC • Leaf cuvette and Ozone flux measurements

  19. Network of 20 field sites Cabauw - Netherlands Auchencort Moss – Scotland UK Zeppelin – Spitsbergen, Norway Melpitz - Germany Mace Head - Ireland Sonnblick - Austria Puy de Dome - France Mt. Cimone - Italy Finokalia- Crete, Greece Pic du Midi - France Jungfraujoch - Switzerland

  20. Network of 19 laboratory facilities Physical Chemistry Department – Wuppertal, Germany Centre for Research Atmospheric Chemistry - Ireland SAPHIR – Julich, Germany EUPHORE Laboratories - Spain AIDA Aerosol Chamber - Karlsruhe, Germany Climate Change Unit – JRC Italy Smog Chambers – PSI Switzerland

  21. Networkof 19 research aircrafts, in collaboration with

  22. INTERCOMPARISONS

  23. Modelling intercomparisons • Δ O3 - RF Assessment: Modelling past and future ozone changes • A variety of models calculate ozone changes since pre-industrial times (1850) and future ozone changes (2100) have been analysed. The modelled ozone changes allow to calculate radiative forcing

  24. Modelling intercomparisons • AQ - Climate Assessment: IPCC4 Experiment II, 2030 Photcomp • A variety of models calculating atmospheric chemistry changes between 2000 and 2030 have been analyzed, which are relevant to the IPCC AR4 sections: • Global Atmospheric Chemistry and climate change • Air Quality and Climate Change

  25. Measurements intercomparisons • HOxComp • Intercomparison of OH/HO2 radical measurement instrument • JCOMP • Intercomparison of actinic flux / photolysis frequency measurements • OVOCcomp • Intercomparison of Oxygenated Volatile Organic Compound (OVOC) Measurements • Development of procedures for quality assurance of atmospheric models

  26. ACCENT WORKSHOPS

  27. ACCENT Workshops • Summarise existing knowledge; • Identify major gaps; • Lay the basis for future cooperative work.

  28. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

  29. In ACCENT outreach and policy related activities have a relevant role as well as educational tool addressed to different target groups (Lower Graduates, Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Female Scientists, Returning Scientists, Eastern European Science Community, Next Generation of EU Politicians)

  30. ACCENT outreach strategy • Two way interaction science-EU Policy • Platform for dialogue with public • Build awareness among scientists • Two main products are expected: • Bottom-up scientific synthesis • Top-down policy synthesis

  31. Science for the general public and press • hand-outs, booklets & narratives • pictures • websites

  32. Press and societal demands for scientists Key statements from the workshop:ARE WE LISTENING ENOUGH? Gothenburg, Oct. 27-28 2004

  33. Science for policy makers • Documents • Web-sites of policy relevant projects

  34. News from the policy world for scientists THE URBINO QUESTIONS whose answers would support future policy making

  35. Urbino Questions • Q1: How will hemispheric background levels of ozone change over Europe over the next 20 to 30 years? • Q2:What is the contribution of natural sources to air pollution in Europe? How are these sources likely to change in the future due to climate change and global change? • Q3: What is the contribution of secondary organic aerosols to PM2.5 in various parts of Europe and which are the contributing sources? What fraction of SOA is of anthropogenic origin? • Q4: What is the change of air pollution levels when moving from the regional scale to the urban air shed scale? How well can we quantify the relations of air pollution levels between the regional, urban background and street canyon scales, for PM10, PM2.5 and ozone?
