  6. After a short time, they wanted to stop working. Paul built a small house and a barn for Babe in a forest. In the evenings, Paul sat outside with Babe next to him and they listened to the trees growing. Paul Bunyan was the best logger of all time. He was very giant. His best friend was Babe the Blue Ox. Paul found Babe in the winter when there was a storm. On that day Paul woke up early and washed his face with ice. The he went out to look for trees to cut down. Suddenly he heard bellowing from the frozen river. There he found a small ox trying to get out of the icy water. 10 1
  7. After one year, a tragedy happened. All the oxen that helped Babe in the work died. So Babe had to work alone. Paul noticed that he and the ox were getting slower and more tired. Paul took the ox with him and called him “Babe”. Paul built a barn for the ox and took care of him, so he started to grow so fast. Paul said: “You have so much power, and when you grow up more you will help me in my work.” Babe became bigger and bigger each day, and he needed so much food and water. 9 2
  8. Paul had another idea, he sent a ship full of sugar to the mosquitoes and bees. They started to eat all the sugar and they couldn’t fly, they fell in the sea. But because Babe was so big and strong, Paul started to use him in his work and made so much money, because Babe could pull most of the trees that Paul cut to the river. And this made the ox very famous. Babe was a lovable pet. When he was happy he used to play and laugh loudly with Paul. 8 3
  9. Babe liked to play tricks on Paul’s men, and this made the men angry. One day Babe went to the lake from which the men get water, and drank it all. Then the men had no water for drinking or cleaning. On the way back, they found big mosquitoes. They followed the men and the men started to run away. Paul had an idea. He sent one of his men to bring some big bees to fight the mosquitoes. But the plan didn’t work well. 7 4
  10. One day Paul looked around after they cut all the trees in one place. He felt a little bad and looked at Babe:” I think we should stop, I will not do this again. Cutting the trees in this way isn’t good for the land,” he said. Paul liked to keep his men happy, so he built big houses for them and gave them the best food. Usually, when Paul and his men cut all the trees in one place, they all move to another place to look for more trees to cut. 6 5
