  1. Why did God hide His wisdom? 1 Corinthians 2:6–10a

  2. 1 Corinthians 2:6-8 6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

  3. 1 Corinthians 2:9-10a 9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,    nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

  4. Why did God hide His wisdom? 1 Corinthians 2:6–10a

  5. Cynicism • Cynic – a person who believes all people are motivated by selfishness. (The American Heritage College Dictionary) • Cynicism is an attitude or state of mind characterized by a general distrust of others' apparent motives or ambitions. (Wikipedia) • Cynicism is what unites K-State Wildcat fans across the country – the allure of hope and the inevitability of disappointment.

  6. Am I cynical? A cynic is a person who believes all people are motivated by selfishness.

  7. Are you cynical? A cynic is a person who believes all people are motivated by selfishness.

  8. Was Jesus cynical? A cynic is a person who believes all people are motivated by selfishness.

  9. Jesus’ Cynicism John 2:23-24 23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing. 24 But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people 25 and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man.

  10. Our Cynicism Towards God Psalm 50:21 These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I (the I AM) was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. Isaiah 55:8-9 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  11. How did this happen?

  12. Satan’s Cynicism Towards God Ezekiel 28:12b-13 Thus says the Lord God: “You were the signet of perfection,    full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;    every precious stone was your covering…On the day that you were created    they were prepared.

  13. Satan’s Cynicism Towards God Ezekiel 28:14-15 14 You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. 15 You were blameless in your ways  from the day you were created,

  14. Satan’s Cynicism Towards God Ezekiel 28:15b, 17 till unrighteousness was found in you… 17 Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. “Satan sees evil everywhere, even in God himself. Ironically, it became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Since the Fall, evil feels omnipresent, making cynicism an easy sell.” – Paul Miller, A Praying Life, p. 78

  15. Satan’s Cynicism Towards God Revelation 12:7-9 7 Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

  16. Satan’s Cynicism Towards God John 8:44 44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Genesis 3:1-7 3 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

  17. The World’s Wisdom: Selfishness

  18. Satan’s Cynicism God’s Dilemma

  19. Why did God hide His wisdom? 1 Corinthians 3:18-20 18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. 19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written,  “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” (Job 5:13) 20 and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” (Psalm 94:11)

  20. Why did God hide His wisdom? God hid His wisdom so He could catch Satan in his craftiness.

  21. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom 1 Corinthians 2:6-7 6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.  1 Corinthians 2:11 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.

  22. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom God’s Beautiful Plan of Redemption

  23. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom The Crucified Carpenter and the Lord of Glory are the same person who is coming twice…once to be judged and then to judge. God’s Beautiful Plan of Redemption

  24. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom • Isaiah 61:1-2 (Luke 4:18-19) “1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,    because the Lord has anointed meto bring good news to the poor;    he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,to proclaim liberty to the captives,    and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God…” What’s up with this comma?

  25. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom • Isaiah 9:6-7 “6 For to us a child is born,    to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder,    and his name shall be calledWonderful Counselor, Mighty God,     Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of his government and of peace     there will be no end,on the throne of David and over his kingdom,    to establish it and to uphold itwith justice and with righteousness    from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.” What’s up with this semicolon?

  26. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom Isaiah 52:13-15a 13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely;    he shall be high and lifted up,    and shall be exalted.14 As many were astonished at you—  his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance,    and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—15 so shall he sprinkle many nations;    kings shall shut their mouths because of him; Is this Jesus on the cross or at the Right Hand of God…or both?

  27. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom Isaiah 52:15b-53:1 for that which has not been told them they see,    and that which they have not heard they understand.53 Who has believed what he has heard from us?  And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 1 Corinthians 2:9 “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,    nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” You have no idea how good God is.

  28. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom John 11:45-48 45Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him, 46 but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.47 So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, “What are we to do? For this man performs many signs. 48 If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

  29. God’s Secret and Hidden Wisdom John 11:49-53 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all.50 Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.”51 He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they made plans to put him to death.

  30. Satan’s Permanent Defeat Ezekiel 28:17b-19 I cast you to the ground;    I exposed you before kings,    to feast their eyes on you.18 By the multitude of your iniquities… so I brought fire out from your midst;    it consumed you,and I turned you to ashes on the earth    in the sight of all who saw you.19 All who know you among the peoples    are appalled at you;you have come to a dreadful end    and shall be no more forever.” Satan’s cynicism towards God brought about his own destruction.

  31. Satan’s Permanent Defeat Revelation 12:10 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

  32. Satan’s Permanent Defeat Revelation 12:11-12 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

  33. Satan’s Permanent Defeat Colossians 2:15 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in the cross. “The cross, a unique event in the history of the universe, has laid to rest – for anyone who understands it – any suspicion about God’s character.” “Jesus defeated Satan in the first place, not by power and force, but by something Satan cannot comprehend: sacrificial love.” – Dennis McCallum, Satan and His Kingdom

  34. We Tend to Forget 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 10 Anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive. Indeed, what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of Christ, 11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not unaware of his schemes.

  35. We Tend to Forget 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ… 2 Corinthians 11:14 14 …for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.

  36. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16

  37. Why did God hide His wisdom? God hid His wisdom to destroy for all time any cynicism and suspicion we have towards Him thus freeing us to move towards others despite their fallenness because we are secure in God’s provision for us.

  38. Maturity (God’s wisdom): Moving through cynicism to self-giving love…just like Jesus! What does maturity look like for you today?
