  3. Impacting Species Notes on Affects on Species-9-21-07Miss Baxter

  4. Introduction Over a long time, species develop adaptations to survive in a changing habitat. But sometimes the environment/habitatchanges too quickly and negatively affects the species in that area.

  5. Although extinction is a natural process, excessive and intensive human activities in the environment have caused a dramatic increase in its rate. Loss of habitat as a result of human activity is considered the number one cause of species extermination.

  6. Other Causes • Habitat alteration • Unregulated commercial use • Poaching • Disruption of migration and breeding behaviors • Contamination by pollutants • Predator control • Competition or predation from introduced species • Natural causes

  7. Each year, each month, each day species of animals and plants are being classified as “threatened”, “endangered”, and even “extinct”. What do these words mean?????

  8. Keystone Species Keystone species-are “key” in how an ecosystem functions. If their #’s go down, the other species are affected.

  9. Threatened species-at risk of becoming endangered because of a decline in numbers. Threatened Species

  10. Endangered Species Endangered species-species are in immediate danger of becoming extinct.
