  1. Thursday: Announcements • Test corrections must be complete by tomorrow morning (Friday) • Retest Monday • 7:40am or 4:00pm • Extra Credit DUE Monday • 1st Unit 8 Quiz is Tuesday

  2. Yesterday’s Meetings • Discussed Make-up work from Absences, Field Trips, etc • Some students not making up work. • District Policy (One Day + 1) for missed instruction. Makeup work always in the Green Folders, plus on Calendar! • Scheduling Recommendations for next year!! Please come talk with me about the choices. Scheduling process starts next week!

  3. Possible Classes Algebra Skills Statistics/Data Analysis AP Statistics PAP/AP English Advanced Quantitative Reasoning (AQR) • PreCalculus • 1st Semester Algebra • 2nd Semester Trig • Independent Math Studies

  4. Yesterday’s Meetings • Cell Phones/Headphones: None out after bell rings. Not even on your desk or lap.

  5. Section 9-2 Vertical Parabolas Pages 620-625

  6. Objectives • You should be able to find graph vertical parabolas including: • Vertex Point • Axis of Symmetry (AOS) • Focus Point • Directrix Line • Length of Latus Rectum (LR) • Complete the Square to obtain vertex Format

  7. What is a conic section? • A conic is simply the intersection of a plane and a double-cone. • 4 common conics are the parabola, circle, ellipse, and hyperbola shown below:

  8. Conical View

  9. Parabola • A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a given point called the focus and the same distance from a line called the directrix. • A parabola is formed when we slice through one end of a double cone an an angle.

  10. Parabola • A parabola is a set of points in a plane that are all the same distance from a fixed line called the directrix and a fixed point not on the line called the focus .

  11. Key Concept • The distance from Vertex Point to Focus Point is “p” • This is also the same distance from Vertex Point to the Directrix Line

  12. Vocabulary • The perpendicular chord to the AOS is called the latus rectum(LR) Latus rectum

  13. When graphing you MUST label… • vertex • focus • directrix • axis of symmetry • endpoints of the latus rectum

  14. Where to find them… • FOCUS: inside the parabola • DIRECTRIX: outside of the parabola • AOS: through the vertex, perpendicular to the directrix • FOCAL CHORD (latus rectum): inside of the parabola

  15. Examples • Graph and find equation examples done in packet of notes together in class.

  16. Homework • Finish examples in Packet of notes • WS 8-3 Vertical Parabolas
