Why Notifications?
  • Flexibility for times when schedules don’t work or a new approach is appropriate
  • Flag for OPS on deviations from rule requirements
  • Not a remedy for bad planning
types of notifications
Types of Notifications
  • Intent to Use “Other Technology” for Assessments
  • Inability to Meet Required Repair Schedule OR Reduce Pressure
  • Plan to Reassess Pipe Segment(s) Less Frequently than Every Five Years
how to submit
How to Submit
  • Mail address and Facsimile number in the rule
  • On-line http://primis.rspa.dot.gov/imdb (no mail or fax required)
what doesn t happen
What Doesn’t Happen?
  • Operators are not relieved from complying with other requirements (e.g., safety condition reporting)
  • No shield from enforcement -- OPS may enforce if Notifications are Late, Incomplete, or Technically Inadequate
things to remember
Things to Remember
  • Submit as early as possible, but no later than “deadlines” in rule
  • Submit on-line or use on-line forms as guide for what to submit
  • Don’t rely on notifications to excuse poor planning
