  1. ANARCHISM Robert Paul Wolff

  2. Overview • What is Anarchism? • The Distinction between Power and Authority • Wolff’s Argument

  3. What is Anarchism? • Weak Anarchism • No governments have legitimate authority. • Strong Anarchism • All governments should be abolished.

  4. Power and Authority • Power: the ability to compel obedience, often by force. • Authority: the right to command, and thus the correlative right to be obeyed.

  5. Autonomy and Responsibility • To be autonomous is to be “self-governing.” It is to decide for oneself what one will do. • Wolff: Free will and autonomy are the roots of our duty to take responsibility for what we do.

  6. The Argument for Anarchism • People ought to be autonomous. • Government authority contradicts people’s autonomy. • Therefore, there is no legitimate government authority.

  7. Analyzing the Argument • What version of anarchism is it meant to support? • Is it valid? Sound? • What are some problems with Wolff’s argument? • How might those problems be solved?
