Simple Model of the greenhouse effect

Simple Model of the greenhouse effect. Includes atmosphere layer. Atmosphere layer passes all solar radiation. Atmosphere layer absorbs all IR from Earth. Atmosphere layer radiates in the IR up to space and down to Earth surface. Surface absorbs solar radiation and IR from atmosphere.

  1. Simple Model of the greenhouse effect • Includes atmosphere layer. • Atmosphere layer passes all solar radiation. • Atmosphere layer absorbs all IR from Earth. • Atmosphere layer radiates in the IR up to space and down to Earth surface. • Surface absorbs solar radiation and IR from atmosphere.

  2. Simple Model of the greenhouse effect Tatm = 257 K Tearth = 303 K = 86° F

  3. Earth is too cold without greenhouse gases, and too warm with them. What is missing? .

  4. What if the atmosphere transmits some of Earth’s radiation? G-x Tearth = 288 K = 15 C = 59 F

  5. Lapse Rate The lapse rate is the rate at which temperature drops with altitude. This rate is about 6 K / km or 3.6 F / 1000 ft. So, if you climbed 4000 feet in the White Mountains, you would experience a 14 F drop in temperature.
