Understanding the Water Cycle: Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, and Collection

Explore the essential stages of the water cycle in this engaging resource. Learn about evaporation, where sunlight transforms water into vapor; condensation, which forms clouds; precipitation, when water returns to Earth as rain, snow, or hail; and collection, as water gathers in oceans, lakes, or rivers. Engage with interactive games, review materials, and watch short video clips that enrich your understanding. This resource is designed for learners of all ages and emphasizes the crucial role of water for all life on Earth.

  3. Main Parts of the Water Cycle • EVAPORATION • CONDENSATION • PRECIPITAION • COLLECTION

  4. EVAPORATION • Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapor or steam. The water vapor or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air.

  5. CONDENSATION • Water vapor in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid, forming clouds. This is called condensation.

  6. PRECIPITATION • Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore.  The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.

  7. COLLECTION • When water falls back to earth as precipitation, it may fall back in the oceans, lakes or rivers or it may end up on land.  When it ends up on land, it will either soak into the earth and become part of the “ground water” that plants and animals use to drink or it may run over the soil and collect in the oceans, lakes or rivers where the cycle starts

  8. What’s the big deal? “Every human, plant, and animal depends on water for survival. Let's explore the Earth's water cycle; what exactly is it?” (Click Flipper to review)

  9. Let’s play a game with Drop! • Click on the rain cloud below to play an interactive game about the water cycle. When you get to the webpage, click on the “Click Here to Play” button.

  10. Let’s watch a short movie clip!!! Click on the picture to begin the video.
