  3. Step 1 • Take Inventory • List all relevant information you know about the topic

  4. Step 2 What do they really want? • Read the Prompt • What is the question asking you to do? • Look for key words • Jot down a preliminary thesis that ANSWERS the question(s)

  5. Step 3 • OUTLINE! • It saves you time and will improve your score • DO IT!

  6. Sample Outline • Introduction • Setting the Scene • Example A • Example B • Example C • Concession Statement • Conclusion Combined for FRQ, Separate for DBQ Combined for FRQ, Separate for DBQ

  9. Step 5 • Set the scene • 4-6 sentences • Talk about the time period • What was happening in US history generally

  10. Step 6 • The Evidence • Clear • Consistent • Coherent • Supporting evidence • Names/major events • Cultural references • Specific historians • OK to use (Doc A, etc.)

  14. Step 8 • Conclusion • Closing arguments • Reiterate strengths of your position • The last thing the reader will see

  15. Step 9 • The intangibles • Spelling, punctuation • Neatness • Avoid cross-outs • skip a line between paragraphs • Black or blue ink • No wisecracks • No arrogant or immature commentary
