  3. Why Is It Dangerous? • High Speeds • Not on a closed course • Most obvious is that it is illegal

  4. High Speeds • Nationwide statistics show that 49 people are injured for every 1000 who participate in illegal street race. • In San Diego 16 deaths and 31injuries were related to illegal street racing.

  5. High Speeds • In Florida 28 accidents, 2 fatalities and 27 injuries in 2001 • According to NHTSA, motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death for people between the ages of 16 to 20

  6. High Speeds • The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety says 5,749 teens died in the US from car and motor cycle accidents

  7. Not On A Closed Course • 16-20 year olds die mostly from racing at high speeds on a non-closed course. • Innocent people have died from illegal street racers. Imagine if you were in this house !!!!

  8. Not On A Closed Course • Former street racer Lin got in a wreck and broke her collar bone, wrist, and chin. • She went through six cars in five years!!!

  9. What will happen to you • Cars in and around illegal street races are often issued equipment violation citations. • Police are allowed to arrest offenders under laws covering reckless endangerment and reckless operation

  10. What Will Happen To You • Your vehicle can and will be confiscated. • You can be arrested. • You can be imprisoned up to 3 months and fined up to $1000.

  11. What Will Happen To You • Spectators are subject to penalties as well. • Your drivers license can be revoked. • You car insurance maybe cancelled or dramatically increased.

  12. What Are They Doing To Prevent Illegal Street Racing • Some police stations are establishing an illegal street force team. • They will target racing hot spots. • Site specific responses • Make physical road changes.

  13. What Are They Doing To Prevent Illegal Street Racing • Providing alternative things for youth to do. • Road safety education in schools and elsewhere.

  14. NHRA • NHRA is an association for people who want to race so they can do it legally. • It is safe and effective.

  15. NHRA • NHRA stands for National Hot Rod Association. • Wally Parks founded it in 1951. • Focused on the development of short distance acceleration

  16. NHRA • Was initially a car club activity program. • It is now dedicated to safety. • Its goal is to help overcome the problem of illegal street racing. • They want to stop the damaging image it was casting.

  17. How To Race In NHRA • Valid vehicle insurance. • Valid vehicle registration. • Valid drivers license. • DOT approved street legal tires. • Seat belts.

  19. Wally Parks • In 1949 with access to suitable dry lake course fast diminishing he lead a campaign to gain permission for use of Boneville Salt Flats in Utah.
