Rapid Growth of Cities • Urbanization -the rapid growth of city populations- • 1860– only 1 in 5 people lived in cities by 1890 1 in 3 people lived in the city • Reasons for rapid growth • New technology such as electricity and steel • Migration of farmers, African Americans and immigrants from rural areas looking for jobs and excitement

  3. B. Problems of Urban Life • Fire was constant threat • Poor people living the slums in crowded tenements • Disease outbreaks

Improving City Life • Cities began to improve urban life • Streetlights • Set up fire, sanitation and police departments • Public health officials worked to control disease • Hospitals and clinics set up for those who could not afford a doctor • Settlement Houses were set up to offer help to the poor in the cities

THE EXCITEMENT OF CITY LIFE • New attractions available in city that were not available country • Department stores began where various goods were sold in sections within the same store. • People worked long hard hours and were looking for time to relax • Leisure Activities such as museums, parks, zoos and sporting events drew people into the city
