  1. EVIDENCE OF EVOLUTION SB5c. Explain how fossil and biochemical evidence support the theory

  2. What is Evolution? • Change in the genetic composition of a population over time.

  3. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/educators/teachstuds/unit3.htmlhttp://www.pbs.org/wgbh/evolution/educators/teachstuds/unit3.html What evidence do scientists have that evolution has occurred? 1. Fossils • Found in sedimentary rock layers (strata) • Fossils found deeper very different from fossils found closer to surface • Fossils found deeper are older-relative dating • A fossil’s carbon14 can be measured to determine actual age- radiometric dating • Fossils have revealed changes in organisms over time and provide clues to changes in climate.

  4. What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred? 2. Homology- Similarity in characteristics of different species resulting from common ancestor a. Homologous structures- structures that may have different functions but have similar structure

  5. What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred? b. Vestigial structures- structures that are reduced & have no function.

  6. What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred? c. Molecular homology- similar DNA sequences indicate close relationships

  7. What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred? d. Embryological evidence- embryo development similar, may indicate close relationship

  8. What evidence do we have that evolution has occurred? • Biogeography • Geographic distribution of species • Island species are similar to mainland species • EX: Darwin’s finches are similar to birds on South Americam Continent.
