  2. Feathers • Incredible works of God. • Tough and strong • Light and bendable • Too weak – a gust of wind could break them and throw the bird to the ground. • Too heavy – not able to fly.

  3. Types of feathers • Each type has a purpose or reason for being on the bird. • The shape and structure is determine by its purpose.

  4. Types of feathers • 5 basic types of feathers • (1) contour feathers • (2) down feathers • (3) semiplumes • (4) filoplumes • (5) bristles

  5. Molting • Loses its old feathers and replace them with new ones. • Bird’s feathers get ragged from flying through trees, building nests, etc. • Eventually these worn out feathers would be no good for flying. • Molting is necessary because having perfectly shaped feathers is important for proper flight.

  6. Molting • Some birds molt all at once ~ cannot fly until feathers grow back • Some birds molt a few at a time • All birds have a molt sequence~ the order in which it loses its feathers • Symmetrical molting

  7. Feather Features • Shaft – hollow & made of material called karatin. • Quill – bottom part of feather’s shaft & attachesto body • Vane – rest of feather • Barbs – Skinny hairs that make up the vane. • Barbules – Tiny, little hairs on each barb.

  8. Contour feathers • Flight feathers • Shape or form • These feathers give the bird its shape or form
