  3. Sports also instill fitness and health awareness • By bringing people together from all over the world to compete at the highest sport levels health and fitness is demonstrated throughout the world • Sport heroes often endorse food and beverages This has health as well as fiscal implications

  4. Number of People overweight Rivals Worlds hungry • The number of underfed people had declined to 1.1 billion • The number of overweight people has increased to 1.1 billion • 80% of the world underfed children come from countries that have a food surplus

  6. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides the following Global facts • 1.6 Billion adults (15 and up ) are overweight • At least 400 million are obese • At least 20 million children under the age of 5 years of age are obese • These are stats from 2005

Global impact! • This problem is affecting many low- middle income countries • Childhood obesity will lead to adult obesity and as a result lead to increased non-communicable diseases • This provides the low income countries with at double burden of disease as they still have higher rates of under-nutrition and infectious diseases.

Health consequences of fiscal policies and subsidies • The USA subsidizes corn and soybeans which produces many unhealthy food choices for a artificially reduced rate. • Are most healthy calories then become more expensive • Norway and Ireland have made successful gains in healthy food choices for all economic groups by targeting appropriate food subsidies.
