  2. Purpose • Review the history of South Brunswick’s Local Mentor Plan • Share a Few Highlights • Explain the Board’s role in the approval process

  3. History • NJ DOE Pilot District -- 2000 • Must have a local mentor plan • Must have a rigorous training component for mentors • Trained nearly 400 mentors over the last five years

  4. New Opportunity • Teacher Quality Enhancement Grants to districts • Link Mentoring and Induction • Link programs to the NJ Professional Standards for Teachers

  5. Needs Assessment • June 2005 -- Focus group discussions • Teacher Quality Enhancement Grant Committee

  7. Vision Statement • The South Brunswick School District sees the teacher as the key to the attainment of school, district, state and national educational goals, and specifically the enhancement of student learning of the NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards.

  8. Vision Statement • Therefore, the South Brunswick School District will support teachers, through a comprehensive, district-wide program, including mentoring, in achieving personal, school, and district goals in meeting NJ Professional Standards for Teachers.

  9. Goals • To train teachers in the theory and practice of mentoring • To improve and sustain the professional work experience of novice teachers • To retain highly qualified new teachers

  11. “Glorified Buddy System” • Strengthen our program beyond buddy system • Become experts in working together as professionals • Improve quality of interactions between mentors and novice teachers

  15. Action Plan • Created over this year with feedback meetings with mentors and novice teachers • Submitted to the State in June of 2006.

  16. Evaluation Program • Feedback Sessions • Review and Revise rubrics Submitted to the State in June of 2006. • Use the Toolkit from NJDOE to revise program • Add meetings with current mentors and novice teachers
