  2. I. Latins • Settled on the Palatine Hill in about 1000 B.C. By 776 B.C., they had a village of 1,000 people. This becomes Rome. • Story of Romulus and Remus becomes the Roman legend of how their city was created. • Pleasant climate and fertile soil allowed them to grow wheat and barley. • Nearby forests provided timber.

  3. II. The Etruscans • Settled in Etruria, north of the Latins. • Originally came from Lydia in Asia Minor to escape a famine. • Alphabet was borrowed from the Greeks. • Used iron tools to grow barley, millet, wheat and grapes.

  4. E. Economic Achievements: 1. Were metalworkers and sculptors • Dug copper, lead, iron and tin • Used them to make weapons, utensils and jewelry 2. Traded these goods for gold and silver with Syria, Greece and eastern Mediterranean countries. Made their society very wealthy.

  5. F. Strong Military 1. Used phalanx 2. Wore heavy leather shoes that helped them win. G. Social Life 1. Gambled with dice and played games. 2. Played sports like wrestling, running, boxing and horse racing. 3. Loved music and dancing.

  6. H. Class System: Originally, there was not much difference in classes. Later, strict classes develop: • Upper class: Wealthy landowners, nobles and priests. Owned most of the land or slaves. • Middle class: Farmers, traders and city workers • Lower class: Slaves How were women treated?

  7. Religion 1. Worshipped gods modeled after the Greek gods. Wanted to please their gods. 2. To find out what the gods wanted, they would ask soothsayers. These were priests who could predict events by reading omens (signs of what is to happen). They might get omens by looking at the livers of sacrificed animals or studying the direction and sound of thunder and lightning. Imagine that you could see into the future. Is this a power you would want to have? Why or why not?
