Employer Research Conducted behalf of the LSC – On employing apprentices • 77% felt it made them more competitive • 80% felt it reduced their staff turnover • 83% relied on them to provide a skilled workforce of the future • 57% reported that a high proportion of their apprentices had progressed into management posts Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

Contracted Hours and Payment Fremantle employs the apprentice on a 35 hour contract Paying a salary of £3.64 per hour (national minimum wage for age group) – plus enhancements for weekend and bank holidays of £2.50 per hour (not allowed to work after 10.00pm until 18) Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

  6. Funding for qualification Care Training Solutions draws down the government funding to facilitate the qualification and undertakes all of the administration and organising Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

  7. Mode of delivery and Training Care Training Solutions undertake the three elements in the programme • Diploma in Health and Social Care • Certificate in Preparing to work in adult Social care level two • Functional Skills – Maths and English level one Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

  8. Length of Training 12 – 18 months with twice monthly release from workplace and regular visits by Care Training Solutions for the provision of underpinning knowledge Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

  9. What happens at the end of the programme If both parties are in agreement – Apprentice and Fremantle The apprentice is given a contract at Carer level 1 This is then reviewed after six months with a view to advancement to Carer level 2 Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011

  14. Drawbacks • An age group that can be outspoken • Need to manage the staff with whom the apprentice works – danger of adopting task focused approach • Staff attitude (somebody to do laundry- washing up etc..) Good Practice Event - 23 February 2011
