    4. History Project started fall 2008: safe driving website for Riley Children’s Hospital Why: Car crashes are the number one cause of death for people age 15-20. Currently: Riley offers an Automotive Safety Program website, but wants additional resources that relate specifically to teens.

    5. Goals Intended audience: new teen drivers and their parents Focus: contract for teens and parents discussing rules, expectations, consequences Additionally, include other safe-driving resources Increase awareness of driving safely, especially for teens

    6. Accomplishments in Design Process Project Identification: -Appeals to teens, effective format -Addresses safety concerns, common hazards Specification Development: -Found similar websites and contracts -Pulled together relevant information for Riley’s needs.

Accomplishments in Design Process (Continued) Conceptual Design: -Dreamweaver software and rough template -Contract creation -Decided specific resources to include Detailed Design: -Created website home page, uploaded complete contract. -Preliminary collection of additional resources: statistics, news/stories, crash videos, health aspects, crash simulations. -Domain through Automotive Safety Program on Riley’s website.

Non-negotiables Teen driver responsibilities addressed with corresponding consequences - Curfew, passengers, music, phone use, fatigue, alcohol/drug use, weather factors Parental responsibilities - Not overreact, pick up anytime no questions asked until a later discussion

    14. Project History CPAP used as a method for providing ventilation, commonly used to treat sleep apnea. We can utilize the CPAP to treat hospital patients and newborn infants with respiratory issues. Due to Indiana state law in a pandemic each patient will only be given three days on a CPAP and then will be taken off. This semester we decided to address this by creating a CPAP machine.     15. Community Need Riley Hospital works with the children in Indiana and is an advocate for preventative healthcare. This project will be a precautionary measure and will address the need of more CPAPs in the case of a pandemic. By addressing this need: Patients will be able to stay on a CPAP machine for the duration of their sickness.

    16. Goals Create alternative CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine that will be able to be used in case of a flu pandemic in Indiana. Our mission is to develop a cheap and simple design for a CPAP machine that could be easily reproduced by researching different humidifiers, compressors, filters, and backup energy sources. Our success is defined by how well we are able to create a CPAP machine makes a difference in the number of patients who receive care in a pandemic.

    19. Functional Decomposition Compressor supply useable pressure Humidifier humidify the air that the patient is breathing. Filter prevent germs, dust, and bacteria. Power Source provide power for the machine.

    21. Design Overview The CPAP machine will receive power from a wall outlet. The air will be first filtered through a filter to remove dust. The aquarium pump will be used as the air compressor. The compressed air will travel through the humidifier. Finally the air will travel through tubing, wrapped in UV lighting to eliminate bacteria. Finally the patient will be provided will a continuous positive airflow through a mask.

Design Overview: Humidifier Types of Humidifiers Portable Humidifiers, holds 1 to 2 gallons of water Range Size: 1 liter to 5 gallons or larger Refill: run for 1-1/2 days, but 1 liter requires refilling every 8 hrs. Ultrasonic Humidifiers, cool mist with ultrasonic vibration Impeller Humidifiers, cool mist with a rotating disk Steam vaporizers, use electricity to create steam that cools before leaving the machine. Avoid this type of humidifier if you have children, hot water inside this type of humidifier may cause burns if its spilled Water boils and microorganisms are killed

    30. Design Overview: Power Source Power will be supplied from electricity from the power grid. Future designs: Implementation of alternative power solutions: Solar cells – to power the CPAP and charge the battery packs during daytime. Battery packs – to power the CPAP during night and as a backup power supply.

    32. Future Plans This semester we plan to look at the ordered parts (compressor and humidifier) and see how they will connect to each other and how they will connect to the system. We also want to get a face mask and tubing to work on the UV lighting part. Change Change
