  2. Technical definitions spell out the meaning of a term…. • The name of the item to be defined • The class to which the item belongs • The features that differentiate the item from all others in the class

  5. How you expand a definition depends on the audience … What is it made of? How does it work? How is it used? Term What are its parts? What is its origin? What does it look like? What does it not do?

  6. Technical descriptions …… • Combine words and visuals • Answers questions in more detail GOAL Create a clear image of a product or process

  7. There are two basic types of technical descriptions…. Product Description Process Description Describes a particular device or mechanism Describes the steps or stages in an event • Cell phone • GPS receiver • How cell calls are sent and received • How a location is determined using GPS

  8. Product Description…. • Introduction • Define the mechanism, tell its function • Provide a brief overall description • Describe the operation principle • List the main parts • Provide a graphic with callouts

  9. Product Description…. • For each main part • Define the part in terms of size, shapeand material • List and describe any subparts • Identify its function and relation to adjoining parts • Identify the mode of attachment

  10. Product Description…. • For the entire mechanism • Discuss the interrelation of the parts, the assembly • Give one complete operating cycle -- theory of operation

  11. Process Description…. • Introduction • Define the process • Tell the purpose and significance • Provide necessary background information • Provide a brief description of the process • List the major stages in the process

  12. Process Description…. • For each stage in the process • Define the stage with a logical definition • Describe the purpose and function • Describe what happens during this stage • Show the relationship between this stage and the next stage
