“Sonnet for Heaven Below” Jack Agueros
Title Heaven is below the Earth. A heaven poem or poem about heaven. A church poem.
Paraphrase God has undercover angels. Children are working in sweat shops. Hobos (homeless) are angels too.
Connotation The poet describes the homeless as angels live and sleep in the subways of New York City.
Attitude The poet gives us his/her attitude through a disappointing, disturbing, and sad tone in his/her poem with words such as: magic, cancerous, shabby, disdain, fractured, mercifully, corrupt, abandoned, derision, and fatigued.
Shifts Since this is a sonnet, the shifts occur at the end of the first, second and third stanza.
Title (Revisited) The title is ironic, because a heavenly sonnet is not normally about Earth bound homeless.
Theme Because the homeless are described as angels, they still have a chance. The people we least expect can be angels.
