  3. Historical background • Definition of DDI3 • Need for tools to make it useable • Establishment of (informal) tools group • Tools group lacked active support • Today institutions develop their own tools

  4. Software in DDA editor • Java • Eclipse Rich Client Platform • Oracle Berkeley DB XML • Database environment

  5. Presentation of editor • Workflow: • Creation of study information stored in study database • Production of study description • Documentation in SPSS • Questionnaire written using wiki mark up

  6. Workflow continued: • Import into editor • Editor used for control of import : corrections etc. • Output to DDI • Files stored in database

  7. Editor • Installable • Flexible • Extendable • Many perspectives of variables and questions

  8. Implementation –so far • Officially implemented March 2011 • Users heavily involved from November 2010 • Regular release ’parties’ • JTrack used for bug messages • Users produce the help documentation

  9. Final implementation – when? • What is still missing: • Import of filters • Import of multiple question items • Proof reader tool • Expected to be completed next year

  10. Experiences • DDI is a complex structure • A long period before our users got really involved • Original design not changed
