Tuesday, 12/17/13 class plan Go over the assignment sheet Revise and expand your prewriting for your story to include plot characters setting theme (if you know it yet) any ideas about dialogue, scenes, structure, inventions, “vocabulary,” and so on Work on your story as I go through the class. HW Typed rough draft of your story is due Thursday, 12/19. It should be at least 1000 words. For tomorrow, continue to write the story.

Your prewriting should cover plot characters setting theme (if you know it yet) any ideas about dialogue, scenes, structure, inventions, “vocabulary,” and so on Work on your story as I go through the class.   4. Thursday, 12/12/13 class plan Consider Gaiman’s Three Phrases. Two ways to develop a SF story about “the present” by means of an imagined future: 1. Starting with an idea/concern/issue about the present that you develop into a version of the future 2. Starting with a vision of the future that you analyze to learn what concerned you about the present HW If you choose #1, research local, national, or international issues and write a paragraph or more about what the issue is and why it concerns you. If you choose #2, write a paragraph or more about the future world that you are building and what problems people face in that world.

  5. Wednesday, 12/11/13 class plan Review Vocab pp. 57-59 with a partner Reread the introduction to F 451 (xi-xvi). Watch the video Two ways to develop a SF story about “the present” by means of an imagined future HW Do Unit 4 Vocab practice test online. Print your test results and bring them in to class. Unit 4 Vocab Test on Thursday, 12/12 Think about our world today. Consider Gaiman’s Three Phrases. Try to develop an idea that can become a story.

  7. Thursday, 12/5/13 class plan Review warm up in pairs. Then we will have a whole class discussion of “The Tiger,” and perhaps also its relationship to F 451. Review Unit 4 vocab pp. 55-56. HW F 451 “Burning Bright” seminar on Friday. Write five interpretive questions on either Part 3 or the text as a whole for Friday. If you haven’t finished your part 3 elements analysis, do that, too. Do Unit 4 Vocab pp. 57-59 for Monday. Do your best to learn how to pronounce them, too. (reminder: the vocab website will say them for you)

Note all references to fire, water, air and earth. Copy the phrase, underline the “element” and note the page number. HWDo Unit 1-3 Vocab pp. 43-44. Do your best to learn how to pronounce them, too. (hint: the vocab website will say them for you)

  12. Monday, 11/25/13 class plan Take out Unit 3 vocabulary work. I will check anything I haven’t seen yet from Unit 3. You will write sentences using Unit 3 vocabulary words for 10 minutes, then share with a small group, who will let you know if you have used it well. Vice versa. Your sentences can be a science fiction fragment, or part of a Thanksgiving story, or anything else amusing or touching, and yet school-appropriate. HW for Tuesday, 11/26: Unit 3 Vocab Test on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Read F 451, pp. 107-158 by Monday, Dec. 2.

HW for Friday, 11/15/13: Friday is a graded seminar, so write at least five interpretive questions about “The Hearth and The Salamander.” Study for Vocab Unit 2 Test on Friday, 11/15. Do “Test Your Vocabulary” Unit 2 and email results to me. Consider the other online resources, too. Finish reading Part 2 (pp. 67-106) by Monday 11/18.
